My Year in the Middle
My Year in the Middle | Lila Quintero Weaver
5 posts | 2 read | 19 to read
In a racially polarized classroom in 1970 Alabama, Lus talent for running track makes her a new best friend and tests her mettle as she navigates the schools social cliques. Miss Garretts classroom is like every other at our school. White kids sit on one side and black kids on the other. I'm one of the few middle-rowers who split the difference. Sixth-grader Lu Olivera just wants to keep her head down and get along with everyone in her class. Trouble is, Lus old friends have been changing lately acting boy crazy and making snide remarks about Lus newfound talent for running track. Lus secret hope for a new friend is fellow runner Belinda Gresham, but in 1970 Red Grove, Alabama, blacks and whites dont mix. As segregationist ex-governor George Wallace ramps up his campaign against the current governor, Albert Brewer, growing tensions in the state and in the classroom mean that Lu cant stay neutral about the racial divide at school. Will she find the gumption to stand up for whats right and to choose friends who do the same?

Mehso-so

I was mostly bored by this book. The dialog seemed forced. I was about the same age as the mc during the time in which this book is set. I lived in TX and SC instead of AL, but I can‘t imagine a lot of kids said “blooming” there either.

KathyWheeler @wanderinglynn @Jerdencon and @sharread : this kind of support is why I‘ve loved this challenge so much. I was thinking, when I posted this, that I hadn‘t met my goals so I hadn‘t done a good job. 😊 4y
wanderinglynn “Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss it you will land among the stars.” The goal of BFC is to focus on yourself and get some good fitness habits going. You did that and made fantastic progress! 🎉 Definitely celebrate! 4y
TheAromaofBooks That is fantastic!! I can't believe you averaged over 9 miles a week. That's some serious walking!! 4y
KathyWheeler @TheAromaofBooks My goal was 12, but you‘re right — 9 is great! 😊 4y

This book should be easy to read — it‘s meant for middle schoolers, so the language is easy and the chapters are short. I‘m just not all that drawn in by the main character and her story. I‘m reading it for a committee I‘m on so I feel that I should finish it. I need some encouragement! Update: 4 & 5 star reviews all over Goodreads, making me think I‘m missing something.

Pickpick

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 Set in 1970 amid a contentious Governor‘s race in racially charged Alabama, Lu finds herself literally and figuratively ‘in the middle‘. Seated in the middle row of class with black classmates on one side and white classmates on the other, she also navigates the world as the daughter of Argentinian immigrants. Great story that parallels current times. #NetGalley #ARC #pocauthors #readpocauthors #readdiversebooks
