@JenniferShepard and I are committed to reading all of Shirley Jackson. This first novel impressed me. Lots of characters to track right off the bat, but once I made this map, the story was easy to follow. And so compelling! This was my May #BookSpin pick.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This was Shirley Jackson‘s first novel. It really shows what a brilliant writer she has always been since the beginning. This book is not a horror novel, but it still portrays those evils that lurk amongst neighbors living on a small block. So far I haven‘t found a Shirley Jackson that I don‘t like 😂 Highly recommend! This is my #doublespin No 5 book

mollyrotondo @Ruthiella Hangsaman is one of my favorites! The Haunting of Hill House is of course amazing. We Have Always lived in the Castle is also excellent. I still have to read Sundial and Bird‘s Nest. The tagged book is a great collection of her writing that her children put together. Really good if you want something different by her as well.

Shirley Jackson's debut novel is set on a middle class, suburban street (Pepper Street) in California. It is an examination of the conservative prejudices & fears as well as class envy & social insularity. The domestic menace that Jackson so powerfully displayed in "The Lottery" is also at work here. Both children and adults are equally menacing and reprehensible in their hypocrisy & selfishness in this novel.
