The author really worked hard to bring an enormous amount of history into every single entry! Did you know, for instance, that LSD came from a dude making an artificial chemical from ergot? Or that the Victorians made jewelry out of castor beans that took out children who sucked on it? You‘ll learn about it in this book! #bookspinbingo

panI heard good things about this book, so I wanted to read it bc who doesn't like a Who-done-it mystery? I was disappointed. Miss Hortense is the MC, but I felt like I didn't know her. There are a ton of characters that I got hit with, and I had a hard time keeping track of who was who. I probably should have DNF'D it, but I hate doing that. There's a lot of readers who enjoyed it, but it just fell flat to me.

I realized while filling out my November #bookspinbingo board that I had The Correspondent on the list twice, so I did a quick swap and slotted in a MG horror title. I still have a fair amount of horror in general---carryover from October---which is just fine by me. I left my #roll100 titles for free spaces.

so-soThis feels like reading fanfic, for the very good reason that it was. The serial numbers have been filed off, but the overall feel is very much still there. That's not a criticism per se, just a fact.
There is some fun dialogue, some fun scenes, but oh my goodness they're both unbearable and the romantic scenes are pure (and awful) purple prose. I enjoyed myself but also had SO many objections.
But hey, this was my #BookSpin.
A very late post showing off my single October bingo. The last half of this month has been a whirlwind of work and intense disassociation from my phone once I‘m home. There was reading, but I spent a good amount of downtime trying to catch-up on sleep. Anyway, October is over. Thank you to the books that let me escape from adulting a few pages (or minutes) at a time.
