This is how I spent my Saturday afternoon. It was absolutely stunning.

BethM I adore Les Mis! 2y
marleed My favorite musical. I read the book (abridged) following my first time seeing the musical. In the book the characters are a bit less altruistic, and I can‘t tell you the amount of time I‘ve spent thinking about that. 2y
readingjedi @marleed I have been thinking a lot about Valjean's acts of mercy in contrast to Javert's devotion to justice. 2 very complex & fascinating characters. Haven't tackled the book yet bit but it's on my list! 2y

Day 5: I do love this book, but it‘s my favorite musical of all time. Tonight was my fifth time seeing it and it was the 2nd best production I‘ve seen. (First was on Broadway.)
#anewchapter

Texreader Haven‘t seen it on stage but I‘ve watched the movie at least ten times. ❤️❤️❤️ 6y
Klou I'm in the same situation as @Texreader . It's my favourite musical film but I haven't seen it on stage YET! And I haven't read the book YET! Both will be ticked off my to-do list someday! 💞 6y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks ❤️❤️❤️ 6y
brandymuses @Texreader @Klou I hope you both get the chance to see it live someday. It‘s truly a whole other emotional experience. This current cast is phenomenal too. 6y
vkois88 Beautiful photo. I'm so glad you get to see/do something you enjoy so much ❤ 6y

If the book #madeyoucry I am unlikely to read it. I do not like sad stories. Except Les Miserable. I I love that book. #31bookpics

marleed I loved this book. I read the abridged version (not realizing it was abridged) so I guess it was full-on characters. 5y

Amen for audiobooks! I've made it into Book 3 (started early) but there's no way I'd have gotten so far without listening to it. I think I prefer the audio. It removes any guilt I feel about all the footnotes I'm NOT reading. (Anyone reading them? There's so many! 🤪)
Sometimes I wonder how editors can abridge a classic. Not so with Les Mis! 😂
I do like the book and look forward to tomorrow's discussion!

@vivastory @Kalalalatja

vivastory I haven't used the audio, but I'm thinking of doing so next week. The footnotes can really interrupt the narrative flow! 6y
merelybookish @vivastory Do you check them? I just decided I'm going to ignorant of a lot of French history and culture! 😬 6y
Kalalalatja There are no footnotes in my edition! No notes either. I‘m really starting to wonder if I should have gone with a different edition 🤔 6y

DGRachel The version I‘m reading has endnotes but they aren‘t linked to the text, so I‘m ignoring them. The footnotes are based on Hugo‘s own footnotes, so I am reading those as they pop up. 6y
merelybookish @Kalalalatja It might be a blessing. Some paragraphs have several notes. It's overwhelming! 6y
merelybookish @DGRachel Right! I should have said endnotes. That's what I have and it's so disruptive (and time consuming) to find and read them. 6y
DGRachel Part of me would like to have the detailed background, but it‘s already taking me more than 2 minutes to read each page. I have to be honest, though, I am sorely tempted to go out and buy another copy so I can open one to the endnotes and have them in front of me while I read. Would that be too ridiculous? 6y
merelybookish @DGRachel Not ridiculous at all. Totally admirable! And then I could ask you if I'm really curious. 😁 6y
DGRachel Dang it. I‘m off to B&N. The one around the corner doesn‘t have it in stock, but the one 5 miles away does. See you in a bit!!!! 6y
merelybookish @DGRachel Excellent! Our residents note expert! 👏👏🙌 6y
AnneCecilie My copy doesn‘t have any notes. Part of me is glad to not have the reading flow interrupted, but maybe I‘m missing out on something 6y
vivastory I have the same edition as @DGRachel I occasionally check them, if I can't figure it out from the context, or if I'm really intrigued. 6y
merelybookish @AnneCecilie I'm sure the endnotes provide layers of historical knowledge, but I'm good with following through story for now! I'll save endnotes for a re-read! 😉 6y
susanw I have the Penguin classic edition. @Kalalalatja is that your edition too? No end notes, and very very few footnotes. I kinda wonder if I‘m missing anything, but then again, I also kind of know the story so I‘m not that worried. 6y
Kalalalatja @susanw I have the Barnes and Noble leatherbound edition. But there is no information, it doesn‘t even list who translated this edition, no introduction, nothing but the story from end to finish 🤷‍♀️ but it is working for me, so I‘m sticking with it, but it does seem a bit weird! 6y
LaLecture I‘m also thinking about skipping the endnotes. In my copy I can‘t even see when there‘s an endnote referring to the text so I‘d have to skip to the back of the book to check if there‘s something to read about this name or place mentioned on page 148 🙄. And most of the end notes don‘t really help me to understand the references or don‘t make them more interesting to me and other things I don‘t unterstand are not mentioned at all. Not helpful. 6y
