Virgin's Lover
Virgin's Lover | Philippa Gregory
From #1 New York Times bestselling author and "queen of royal fiction" (USA TODAY) comes a riveting and scandalous love triangle between a young woman on the brink of greatness, a young man whose ambition far exceeds his means, and the wife who cannot forgive them. In the autumn of 1558, church bells across England ring out the joyous news that Elizabeth I is the new queen, yet one woman hears the tidings with utter dread. She is Amy Dudley, wife of Sir Robert, and she knows that Elizabeth's ambitious leap to the throne will draw her husband back to the center of the glamorous Tudor court, where he was born to be. Elizabeth's excited triumph is short-lived. She has inherited a bankrupt country where treason is rampant and foreign war a certainty. Her faithful advisors warns her that she will survive only if she marries a strong prince to govern the rebellious country, but the one man Elizabeth desires is her childhood friend, the ambitious Robert Dudley. As the young couple falls back in love, a question hangs in the air: can he really set aside his wife and marry the queen? When Amy is found dead, Elizabeth and Dudley are suddenly plunged into a struggle for survival.

The first half of this book bored me to death- I had more time to read then but just couldn‘t get into it.. but the second half of the book is much more thrilling and edge of my seat waiting for what is going to happen next , only problem is I‘m so busy and only have time to read a page or two at a time 😫

I thought I had already read this one but looking at my list it‘s not there but as I read the first few pages it seems familiar- oh well I will get into it anyways ; the next book in this series I have is on cds- yes when I ordered it I didn‘t realize it wasn‘t a book 🤦🏻‍♀️ so while I reorder it and wait for it to come in I will continue to read about Elizabeth- I don‘t like her very much..too much like her father

While I understand this is fiction, I‘m disappointed in PG‘s treatment of both Elizabeth and Amy Robsart. Amy was not an illiterate dolt as she is portrayed here. And Elizabeth is made out to be an easily pliable, over emotional ninny who mirrored the opinions of whomever was nearest. By all accounts she was demanding and spoiled, but she was also remarkably astute politically or she‘d never have held her crown.

Boooo, Philippa Gregory.

Ericalambbrown @GingerAntics You know, there are some things I don‘t particularly mind in historical fiction - taking conversations that happened by letter and making them face-to-face, for example. Hell, I don‘t even mind speculation to fill in the gaps of a narrative and then noting it as “best guess” from what is known of the subject. But this seemed out of character given everything academic I‘ve read about Elizabeth (a lot) and Amy (the little available). 5y
GingerAntics There are a few (very few) historical fiction pieces I can stand. Most I can‘t. “Best guesses” need to at least keep with the spirit of the person, and fiction authors rarely, if ever, do their homework enough to be able to do that. 5y

I picked Historical Fiction. I found a video of Philippa Gregory walking around a Borders store. I don‘t know about her “favorite” but she absolutely GUSHED about Edith Wharton: “I had a Wharton Summer, where I just read Edith Wharton all summer. And at the end of it, I have to say, I was *tremendously* genteel! I felt my manners improving almost day by day. She‘s a great writer!” My favorite of Miss Gregory‘s is the tagged book. #AGameOfFavorites

Erinsuereads She‘s a never ending fountain of great quotes honestly. 6y

⛄️It‘s a tie...between all of ‘em 😄 I tend to watch more of the skiing events and the figure skating/speed skating.
⛄️The tagged author is probably one that I feel appeals to most of my reading friends on different levels.

Another terrific entry in Gregory's Tudor series. She hits the level of detail perfectly, and gives the reader a clear idea of what it must be like to become queen at 25. Elizabeth I and Robert Dudley, as well as his wife Amy, are at the heart of a fascinating mystery.
