So there I was minding my own business, enjoying some Caleb Carr, when suddenly he throws in a piece of rubbish that has now totally ruined the book for me. I wasn't expecting a protagonist with a prosthetic leg. I have one too so that was kind of cool.
But the situation he describes is such nonsense and so improbable that I'm hopping mad (pun totally intended) 🙄 Now I can't take any of the story seriously. Not offended just disappointed.

Took my LFs (Little Friends- I work as a Nanny) to the library today. My happy dance in the New Book section prompted one of my charges to rush to the craft table and whip me up a new personalized bookmark for the occasion 🙂

Keegz63 @UnidragonFrag I just noticed from my own post that I'm missing a book! I see two copies of Pearls of Lutra! I need to find which one I'm missing 🙄 Oh well - there's my excuse to hit the bookstore tomorrow! 8y
night_shift Haha! I didn't notice! I just know there are like 13 books or probably more in the series and I've only read up to the fourth one. So. Good luck finding the others! 8y

I want to say it was terrible but I can't because it was well written. The story was superficial and the characters were not the least bit developed - except for James and Sadie, who tease us along with some complexity before abandoning us to a wishing-washy son and a good time girl who manages to nurse two babies simultaneously, crimp her hair, make biscuits, pack for a three month long boat voyage with said babies and stands by her man. UGH

Keegz63 @becausetrains Will do! When I picked it up I didn't realize it would tie in so tightly with the book I just finished. My perception of it so far is definitely influenced by my previous read. I think I'm engaged more than I would have, had I not read "My name is Red" first. 8y

Just wanted to say this is NOT a casual read - but in the best possible way! I started it, and have gone back twice to start over, because at some point my brain was like, wait... This is a truly amazing story. I don't want to miss is thing! I need a few hours of uninterrupted reading time to savor this one.

#Funfridayphoto I was 11 yrs old and snuck this one out of my Mom's pile of old paperbacks. Went to a sketchy dark little used bookstore and found a copy of "The Birds" by duMaurier. Kept going back to the same used bookstore cuz the old guy who worked there didn't give me the hairy eyeball every time I bought an "Adult" book. ?

[DELETED] 2232195534 I love this cover! And 35 cents! Great book!! 8y
Keegz63 @kaysreadinglife - showing my age a bit with the 35 cents thing lol.... But yeah I remember when I was a kid, my first new paperback was "Jaws" and I think it was priced at like $2.99 right off the shelf. Ah the good ol' days ? 8y

Really really enjoyed this one. It was like reading the Irving I knew a long time ago - outrageous characters, fantastic situations, and the magic of watching him tie all the colorfully loose ends together. So many themes to think about - Riotous enough to need a short nap after finishing this one. One of the best I've read this summer, but then again I've always been a fan - so happy not to be disappointed!

@Litsy Was a time when I could read 80-100 books in summer alone. Then lost my leg in an accident. It felt like the part of my brain that could read, got removed as well. Just couldn't focus or retain. Stopped trying. This summer I have Litsy. It's a huge motivator! I am reading again! ❤️Up next!

Bradbury's predictions about all night banking, earbuds and huge flat televisions, is downright eerie. That attention spans would some day be no more than 15 minutes long, ring true for our times - as well as the bread and circus theme and media manipulation. Awesome.

For #recommendsday . I found myself completely suspending disbelief, and plunging headlong into the world of early Newfoundland. The characters complex in their seeming simplicity. Love, folkways, tragedy, history all make for the best sort of storytelling.

Not bad, but not great. The theme seemed universal, not particularly English - but since it was set in England I guess that's all there was to it. Don't spend a lot of time looking for revelations. Everything is spelled out for you. Creepy at times, but often just plain silly.

Liked this one a lot. It's a larger-than-life story, in a great summer read. I saw a little of everyone I've ever known, including myself, in Gilman's characters. Tragic, funny, romantic and dramatic, it managed to sneak up on me - so that by the end, I felt touched more than I'd realized.

This story was so promising! Well written, clever and witty at times - but overall disappointing. I have no doubt there will be a movie. I could say more but a lengthy review won't help this book and left me so disinclined to care that I'll just leave it at that.

Half-way through and I'm still not sure how I feel about it. I've read that people are comparing it to a fairytale. I disagree. It's more of an anti-fairytale disguised as a folktale. Impatiently waiting to see what I think of it when I'm done.
