The Anatomist's Apprentice
The Anatomist's Apprentice | Tessa Harris
25 posts | 25 read | 62 to read
In the first in a stunning new mystery series set in eighteenth-century England, Tessa Harris introduces Dr. Thomas Silkstone, anatomist and pioneering forensic detective. . . The death of Sir Edward Crick has unleashed a torrent of gossip through the seedy taverns and elegant ballrooms of Oxfordshire. Few mourn the dissolute young man--except his sister, the beautiful Lady Lydia Farrell. When her husband comes under suspicion of murder, she seeks expert help from Dr. Thomas Silkstone, a young anatomist from Philadelphia. Thomas arrived in England to study under its foremost surgeon, where his unconventional methods only add to his outsider status. Against his better judgment he agrees to examine Sir Edward's corpse. But it is not only the dead, but also the living, to whom he must apply the keen blade of his intellect. And the deeper the doctor's investigations go, the greater the risk that he will be consigned to the ranks of the corpses he studies. . . Advance praise for Tessa Harris and The Anatomist's Apprentice '"Tessa Harris has delivered a deftly plotted debut. Just when you think the puzzle is solved, she reveals yet another surprising twist which leaves you marveling at her ingenuity." --Carol Carr, author of India Black "CSI meets The Age of Reason with a well-drawn, intriguing cast of characters, headed by the brilliant Dr. Thomas Silkstone. Full of twists and turns, Tessa Harris's debut mystery can confound the most adept reader. Vivid details pulled me right into the world of early forensic sleuthing. A page turner!" --Karen Harper "Tessa Harris takes us on a fascinating journey into the shadowy world of anatomist Thomas Silkstone, a place where death holds no mystery and all things are revealed." Victoria Thompson, author of Murder on Sisters' Row "From dissection table to drawing room, this visit to late eighteenth-century England is chock full of intriguing twists and turns. Along with the visiting surgeon from the colonies, Dr. Thomas Silkstone, readers will find themselves challenged by the who, the how, and the why of murder at an idyllic Oxfordshire manor house." --Kate Emerson

For a book set in 1780 it was quite surprising that some of the analytical tests used in the story were not developed until many years later. Having worked in the chemical industry including some laboratory work was the only thing that kept me interested in this rather dull, slow novel. However, some of the accusations, innuendo and wrong footing in the investigation was quite enthralling. I don't intend to read any other books in this series.

"The Anatomist's Apprentice" by Tessa Harris follows the story of Dr. Thomas Silkstone, an anatomist who investigates a mysterious death in 18th century England. Along the way, Silkstone must navigate social hierarchies and political intrigue to uncover the truth behind the murder. This book is perfect for fans of historical fiction, murder mysteries, and medical dramas.

I didn‘t love this book like I was hoping I would. It had old-timey mystery vibes and I liked the setting and historical details, but the romance felt so cliche as did some of the plot points 😒
It did take a while to figure out who did what while the crimes kept piling up and it was interesting to have the “detective” be a surgeon/anatomist.
Not stellar, but a decent read.
6/10

I read less than 10 pages yesterday. With the way I was feeling, focus was an effort. I've only got a minor headache today, so I'm hoping it'll be easier today. What I've read so far seems promising!

I don't know if I'm coming down with something or what, but I'm body-achingly tired today. My plans for the rest of the day will hopefully be just this. (Aside from fetching my eldest from the bus later). #LazyDayReading

The Anatomist's Apprentice is an enjoyable little historical mystery. It's the first in a series I look forward to continuing. I found it moved at a decent pace without being too "heavy", despite some of the grim imagery it contains. Artwork above by Nunzio Paci.

There is so much I didn‘t like about this book, but I loved the main character, and that‘s why it‘s more than so-so. But too many plot lines, too many villains, and poor editing and layout. I‘m willing to try the second in the series, but if I find the same problems, I‘ll give up after that. Picture has nothing to do with the book, but came up in my FB memories from our trip to Derbyshire three years ago.

Lcsmcat Well, it made me read your whole post, to find out what the sheep had to do with it. 5y

Finally! We have Internet and tv service back, although we are about to switch providers. I didn‘t realize how much we watched on Netflix until we were without 😊 I have gotten a lot of reading time the last few days, but I needed a break from Zelda. Reading even a fictional account of her life is exhausting! So I started this, which I‘ve had on my Kindle for a while. Interesting.

This #audiobook served well as a story to listen to while falling asleep at night. It was good company during a night of insomnia too. Read by Simon Vance at a relaxing pace, the mystery seemed convoluted at times but came to a clear resolution at the end.

Mdargusch I love that it says “meh” now! 6y
tournevis @Mdargusch Still says so-so in the Android app. 6y
Clare-Dragonfly @Mdargusch @tournevis It still says “so-so” for me, on iOS. 🤔 6y
Mdargusch Funny @clare-Dragonfly @tournevis because it says meh on the new website. (edited) 6y

This was eh...the storyline was a bit too convoluted and the characters weren‘t particularly likable. I‘m definitely skipping the rest of the series.

DivineDiana Good to know because I stacked the first based on your review! 😀 7y
Crewgurl @DivineDiana I really wanted to like this one, it just didn‘t happen lol. I was also reading the Lady Darby series, which is a similar premise and just so much better!!!! Definitely read (edited) 7y

After reading a bunch of books where the main crime solve is female, it was great to read about a guy who couldn‘t let sleeping dogs lie. Plus it‘s historical fiction which is always 👍 There were a few plot twists that I really enjoyed but the romance I could have done without 🤷‍♀️

I liked the cover and the title. Unfortunately for me the story is a pick but low on that scale. Only slightly better than so-so .

Since starting this book, I've learned that it's Book 1 of a series. I should finish it today. It's quite suspenseful; and not many of my expectations have come to pass. I love the unexpected outcomes. I'll continue reading the series -- but not back-to-back.

Slow start, but the descriptions of the autopsy procedures kept me reading. The last 15 chapters were by far the best in the book for me. I didn't connect with many of the characters but did like the doctor, so I'll give the next one a try!

[DELETED] 2232195534 This was the first book in the series, right? Maybe the characters will grow on you. 8y
Bookzombie I tried this one on audio a while ago and bailed. Maybe I should try it in print? 8y

In this scene, the corpse of a young man is exhumed for autopsy. I wonder if this level of respect is practiced in today's morgues and mortuaries. I like that the author did this. I'll search for more of Tessa Harris' works.
