The Anatomist's Wife
The Anatomist's Wife | Anna Lee Huber
Scotland, 1830. Following the death of her husband, Lady Darby has taken refuge at her sisters estate, finding solace in her passion for painting. But when her hosts throw a house party for the cream of London society, Kiera is unable to hide from the ire of those who believe her to be as unnatural as her husband, an anatomist who used her artistic talents to suit his own macabre purposes. Kiera wants to put her past aside, but when one of the house guests is murdered, her brother-in-law asks her to utilize her knowledge of human anatomy to aid the insufferable Sebastian Gagea fellow guest with some experience as an inquiry agent. While Gage is clearly more competent than she first assumed, Kiera isnt about to let her guard down as accusations and rumors swirl. When Kiera and Gages search leads them to even more gruesome discoveries, a series of disturbing notes urges Lady Darby to give up the inquiry. But Kiera is determined to both protect her family and prove her innocence, even as she risks becoming the next victim

First book in a mystery series, it offered me a very enjoyable read, perfect for relaxing. It's the type of books, I put in my guilty pleasure stack. It's a perfect palate cleanser, or a perfect read if you need a pick-me-up. While the crime is gruesome, romance is very present. The plot is very predictable, the romance part as well, but sometimes it's what you need ;)

kspenmoll I enjoyed this series for escapism. 2y

This was okay-ish. It reminded me a lot of Deanna Raybourn's Lady Julia Grey series. Not sure I'll continue reading the Lady Darby series, though.

The mystery wasn't very mysterious for me and I didn't really fall for the characters.

StaceGhost It gets better as she goes, especially once she starts delving into the psychology a bit more. I agree though! Very Lady Julia adjacent. 2y
julesG @StaceGhost Thank you. Good to know it improves. 2y

A murder at a remote Scottish castle brings together a woman with a shady reputation and a rake with investigation experience, and sparks fly! Also lots of gowns.

Nicely narrated audiobook with some unfortunate technical inconsistencies and copy editing boo boos.

Book 2 of #fabulousfebruary and book 11 of the year.

I read more chapters of The Fifth Season and Mansfield Park (finally got past the $&*% play!) and finished A Great Reckoning.

We decided on our next few months of mystery book club selections, and I started the audiobook of our March book (tagged). While I was playing around in Libby, I went ahead and put holds on some upcoming #AAM selections.

This is a consistently good historical mystery series. Lady Darby is a complex character, and the author has developed her romantic relationship through the series without sacrificing the mystery story lines.

I finally got to reading this mystery, the 1st in a series, that @Lynnsoprano gifted me a while ago. I like that Lady Darby is an artist, but that aspect isn‘t fully explored in this book. A murder occurs at a house (castle?) party & Lady Darby helps to solve it. I‘m sure the characters continue to be developed as the series continues— will keep an eye out for the rest.

Minor quibble— the outfit/hair on cover doesn‘t match 1830s dress styles 😏

ValerieAndBooks Thanks again @Lynnsoprano 💖! Sorry it took so long to get to this. 5y

Another edition of bathtime reads! Finally finished this great mystery (given to me by another person on Litsy). Victorian-era Scotland setting. Fantastic heroine. The murder they were solving made me the slightest bit squeamish (main character used to draw for the dissections her anatomist husband did, so she knows what to look for on dead bodies) but the rest of the book was well done and enjoyable. I want to read the rest of the series! 4🌟

This book was so good! Lady Darby is smart and clever and doesn‘t quit until she‘s certain the mystery is solved. I kept wanting her and Gage to have a sexy moment and had to remind myself it wasn‘t that type of book. Apparently I read too many historical romances! This is set in Scotland in the 1800s in a castle, but this is definitely a mystery!

SquiBella Historical fiction without romance? 😱 What kind of nonsense is this? 😂 Jk, but I‘m sure I would be thinking the same thing! 6y

Okay, friends, I‘m in challenge planning mode (AKA My Happy Place). I plan to participate in both the #ReadingWomenChallenge and #Booked2019.

I want to fully commit to the “New to You Author” prompt, so I need your suggestions, please. Anyone you‘ve read and loved who is typically under the radar? The more ideas, the better!

mreads I'm doing both of these challenges too. Two books I read recently that were great were Scribe by Alyson Hagy and Dog Symphony by Sam Munson. 6y
saresmoore @mreads Thank you! Those are both new to me. I‘m really looking forward to the challenges. 6y
AmyG Read The Heart‘s Invisible Furies. It‘s that good. 6y

Moray_Reads I'm doing both too, though the likelihood I finished either is remote! I recommend (assuming they're new to you!) Helen Sedgwick (particularly The Comet Seekers), Mikhail Shishkin (The Light and the Dark), Zoe Gilbert (Folk), Auður Ava Ólafsdóttir (Hotel Silence), Keri Hulme (The Bone People), Heinrich Böll (Group Portrait with Lady or Lost Honour or Katherina Blum) and Jess Kidd (Himself). 6y
saresmoore @AmyG Will do! All three of those Irish authors have been on my TBR for too long, but I will certainly take your recommendation! 6y
saresmoore Moray, I knew I could count on you! ♥️ They are all new to me, and I actually own The Light and the Dark because of your endorsement. I‘m adding all these to the TBR, now! @Moray_Reads 6y
Moray_Reads @saresmoore well, that is one of the best books I have ever read, as is Group Portrait with Lady but I've loved all of these and can heartily recommend them. Some might work for other prompts! 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage I‘m doing both of those challenges in 2019 also, @saresmoore and @mreads Thanks for posting this question. So many options ... 6y
Hestapleton I SUPER love SINGING THE BONES TOGETHER by Angela Shannon (not on the Litsy database). Only four reviews on Goodreads but I met the poet during undergrad and I loved her work. 6y

batsy I'm currently reading this. New to me, and might be new to you? I'm just going off of the Tournaments of Books list for a bit at the moment. 😁 Still early days but it has such beautiful descriptions of the landscape of North Carolina marshlands 6y
saresmoore @Cinfhen Thank you! 😘♥️ There are definitely some dual challenge options in there—in fact, Confessions is the one I chose for Mystery/Thriller by a WoC. 6y
saresmoore @Hestapleton Thanks! That‘s a great option for this! 6y
saresmoore @Leftcoastzen I haven‘t read that one yet, but it is certainly one I want to read. I bet it would work for other challenge prompts, too. 🤔 6y
saresmoore @CouronneDhiver I still haven‘t read any of his work. That‘s a great suggestion—thank you! 6y
saresmoore @LeahBergen Oh! How do I keep forgetting about her? I mean, at the very least, I really ought to purchase a pretty edition... 6y
saresmoore @batsy That‘s one that keeps coming to my attention. Feeling like the Universe is trying to get a message across. 🧐 6y
Moray_Reads @saresmoore @batsy the Universe definitely is, I started this one today too! It's beautifully and vividly written 6y

An entertaining start to the series featuring Lady Darby. Fleeing London after the death of her husband & the scandalous aftermath, Kiera Darby takes up residence with her sister‘s family content to paint & hide away from the world in their Highland home. When a weekend house party turns deadly, Kiera is asked to help Sebastian Gage investigate the crime. A solid historical mystery that gives you plenty of reason to read the sequel. A fun read.

I stayed up too late last night finishing this! Good suspense and atmosphere, with an interesting protoganist back-story. Our heroine, a widow, was forced by her late husband to illustrate his dissections, leading to her being vilified as an "unnatural" woman. I did guess who dunnit before the big reveal, but not till pretty late in the game.

DNF. It's not bad or anything but after reading other things a couple nights in a row, I feel no inclination to get back to it. It was heavier on the burgeoning romance plotline than the mystery and I'd have preferred it the other way around.
