pickThe second in Mario Giordano‘s AUNTIE POLDI SERIES (energetically translated from German by John Brownjohn) is a rollicking crime novel packed with humour, passion and more twists than you can shake a stick at. Poldi is a great creation - a 60-something alcoholic with a death wish who‘s lust for life is reinvigorated by her investigations - such that you can‘t help root for her. I hadn‘t read the first book but I will definitely be doing so.

To be honest, I don‘t necessarily read these for their mysteries but rather for their delightful and colorful characters. The mystery here involves blackmail, greed and the Mafia, and as usual Poldi is racing to beat her Chief Inspector boyfriend to the denouement.
As far as the writing is concerned there is a bit much of run-ons and long-windedness, but as it is usually in aid of 🔻
pickMany have raved about this new series with Auntie Poldi, and I can understand why. There‘s lots to love in the spunky, older, eccentric Aunt character. She represents a missing area of heroic middle- to late- aged female characters in fiction. But I just did not love this series. The writing, though wry, did not capture me, and neither did the story. A good book, but I don‘t think I‘ll continue with the series.

so-soI really enjoyed the first book in this series, Auntie Poldi and The Sicilian Lions. This one was cute, but not quite as good IMHO. The nephew‘s book POV didn‘t add anything for me and the story meandered a bit too much and didn‘t really stick to solving a mystery. #netgalley out March 5 in the US

pickAuntie Poldi is a bit like Agatha Raisin plunked down in sunny Sicily. The woman is an endless source of witty conversation, narcissistic self-awareness, practicality, and just plain smarts. I'm going back to read the first Auntie Poldi and will then add Giordano and Poldi to my list of must-read new books. Highly recommended for readers who like a little spice and sun with their mysteries. Comes out in March 2019.
