Shuri: The Search for Black Panther
Shuri: The Search for Black Panther | Nnedi Okorafor
30 posts | 19 read | 23 to read
The world fell in love with her in the movie. Now, the Black Panther's techno-genius sister launches her own adventures - written by best-selling Afrofuturist author Nnedi Okorafor and drawn by Eisner-nominated artist Leonardo Romero! The Black Panther has disappeared, lost on a mission in space. And in his absence, everyone's looking at the next in line for the throne. But Shuri is happiest in a lab, surrounded by gadgets of her own creation. She'd rather be testing gauntlets than throwing them. But a nation without a leader is a vulnerable one - and Shuri may have to choose between Wakanda's welfare and her own. COLLECTING SHURI 1-5

I really liked this Shuri collection, although I do wish Shuri had perhaps worked a little more persistently to find the missing T'Challa. (Also, the art is not stellar.) However, we got a scene where Shuri works on some inventions with Rocket, and so it is all worth it.

(quarantine book #97; read an own voices book)

I loved Shuri in Black Panther and wanted more of her lively personality in this graphic novel. Maybe after she died and came back she was more serious (just like Buffy), but I missed the personality I loved in Black Panther.

Photo from our date night the other night. I surprised my boyfriend by taking him to a comic store, then to a brewery to read our new finds. 🤓🍻

I love Shuri! And I appreciate the fact that she's young AND wise. Plus, she's brilliant, funny -- and oh yeah, she saves the world! I'm not a big reader of graphic novels but if it's written by Nnedi Okorafor, I'm there.

Princess Shuri must make some tough decisions for the safety of Wakanda while in search of her missing brother.
I adored this volume focusing on Shuri (who I've been fan girling over since the Black Panther movie!) and her loyalty to her home and family. Loved the special appearances from Rocket, Groot, and Iron Man!

Caterina Oh I might have to figure out how to get my hands on this! I've also been fangirling over Shuri since watching Black Panther. 😂💕 5y
kyraleseberg @Caterina It's definitely worth checking out! 5y

I really enjoyed this comic about Shuri and her exploits as a scientist, princess of Wakanda, and maybe, possibly Black Panther. The artwork took me a moment to get into because it felt a bit old fashioned, but it grew on me. And I really liked how it drew on some character / costume design from the movie. Plus I just generally adore Shuri and always want more of her! I also enjoyed the cameos from various other superheroes.

Issue #7 finds Shuri teaming up with Miles Morales and Ms. Marvel to fight Graviton. Things get complicated when one of Miles‘ classmates get involved. Have to say, I really liked the art in this one. Both Okorafor and the regular artist were on hiatus this issue (and #6) but Okorafor returns with a new artist drawing the comic with Issue #8. This is definitely an ongoing series I‘ll continue reading. Shuri‘s story is a fun one.

Issue #6–Okorafor is on hiatus as writer, returning on Issue #8, but the adventure continues as Shuri finds herself in a Brooklyn tracking what she thinks is the black hole making space creature that followed her back to Earth. It isn‘t—it‘s a new baddie & Shuri & Miles Morales team up to take him on. I‘m enjoying reading about Shuri interacting with the larger cast of Marvel characters & definitely look forward to the next issue.

I‘m caught up to the latest! I 💕 Shuri, and I really liked that she wasnt pressured, she was convinced.
1 thing that did bother me was some neg comments about Stark “saving the day” instead of an African character. I can see why that would feel like white saviorship but it drives me a little crazy that they almost didnt notice the teamups with Storm and Mansa and Ikoko? There was more than one person helping, stark was just one of the squad

Issue #5–and this may be the best one yet in a series that started strong & keeps on getting better. Together, Shuri & Iron Man fight against a baddie—while shouting out math equations at each other as they also try to close a black hole. (It‘s pretty epic & fabulous, I‘m not going to lie.) And the biggest question of all...will Shuri take up the mantle of the Black Panther in her brother‘s absence. This was a good one. Definitely recommended.

Issue #4 & Shuri is back on Earth but there‘s a problem—the space-lubber she, Rocket & Groot fought has followed her back. Add some secret societies, black holes, outsiders wanting Wakanda to do more for all of Africa, & you have a complex, interesting story. What I love about this comic is seeing Shuri come into her own in the absence of her brother & that she isn‘t doing it AS the Black Panther, she‘s relying on her own intelligence & skills.

Issue #3. Is there anything better than Groot running around saying “I am Groot?” Yes, there is & it‘s Groot running around saying “I am Shuri.” Love it. While looking for her brother, Shuri projects herself into Groot (long story...) and together with Rocket they have to defeat a giant energy sucking intergalactic bug and there are consequences. Another good issue and I look forward to reading the next one. A definite recommend.

Its excited that so many people fell in love with Shuri that she got her own series! Even if it's just a short run, she's an amazing hero and this is an interesting start to her own story. I look forward to the rest of the series!

Issue #2 was out today and another one of my purchases. Refusing to take up the mantle of the Black Panther, Shuri instead focuses on finding her brother. Art is solid (although not my favorite style), I like where the story is going and love the twist at the end. Definitely looking forward to Issue #3. Another comic I highly recommend.

One of our local libraries is killing it with author visits/signings this year. Colson Whitehead last month and Nnedi Okorafor last night. My oldest and I got our copies of the Akata books signed and everyone received a copy of Shuri. Nnedi is an absolute delight-a very engaging speaker.

LibrarianRyan I‘m jelly. Super surprised she was at Champaign. If I had known I would have driven over. I she is my #1 get for ISL. I‘ve made sure all the important people know it. And I complained to the head of the committee that they haven‘t chosen AW and AW as Illinois reads. We need more diversity in the award. 6y
Suetara @LibrarianRyan Shoot! If I see other authors scheduled to come there that might interest you, I‘ll let you know. The Akata books would be great picks. We were excited to hear that she‘s writing another one. 6y
lauralovesbooks1 It's always a fun moment when a list of recent author visits makes you realize that there are more Litsy people on your area. CPL has brought in some great authors lately - now I just need my work schedule to cooperate so I can go to some of them. :) 6y

Suetara @lauralovesbooks1 Another CU person! (Sorry it‘s taken me so long to respond, but my husband and I have been sick for the last 2 weeks and all I‘ve done is sleep.) Did you know that there‘s an indie bookstore opening soon in Monticello? It‘s called Hartfield Book Co. 6y
Gezemice Oh my gosh, Nnedi was here? I am in Urbana! I did not know this. Love her! @librarianryan @Suetara @lauralovesbooks1 Nice to know there are others in this area! 6y
LibrarianRyan @Gezemice yep. I‘m in the capitol. Formally of Mattoon. It means our group is growing bigger. For the longest time it was just me, and @bklover reaping central IL. @Suetara was a nice edition and hi @lauralovesbooks. We should do a central IL meet up no always end up going to STL. (edited) 6y
Gezemice @LibrarianRyan That wouldbe awesome! To be honest, STL is rather far for me. Nice to hear you are so close! Mattoon is really close to CU, too! 6y
LibrarianRyan @Gezemice yeah. When I lived there we would go to Champaign to go to shopping. And every time I had a system library meeting. Now I‘m in the capitol. Depending where I think CU is an hour and a half away. Not too bad. 6y
Gezemice @LibrarianRyan We made the drive a month ago - went to see Lincoln‘s house and tomb - I think it was an hour and 10 minutes or so... 6y
Bklover I‘d love to come to Springfield! (Or CU for that matter!) My daughter lives there. I‘m going to have to keep track of all the Central Illinoisans @LibrarianRyan @Gezemice @Suetara @Lauralovesbooks (edited) 6y
LibrarianRyan @Gezemice you were almost literally in my back yard. I‘m two blocks away from Oakridge. And I work down the street from his house. Very cool. 6y
LibrarianRyan @Bklover well dang it I guess I‘m going to have to set something up. Let me look at some Calenders. I‘d love to invite everyone to a literary event but I‘m still working on getting something going. 6y
Gezemice @LibrarianRyan That‘s awesome! We loved it. I wanted to go because I realized I have been living here for decades and have not seen the Lincoln memorials. We will go back because we got a late start and did not have time to see the museum. (edited) 6y
Suetara @LibrarianRyan @Gezemice @Bklover @lauralovesbooks1 Life has gotten in the way of my Litsy time lately, so I‘m late jumping in here, but I think a meetup is a great idea!! 6y

Not going to lie, super excited not only to have Shuri get her own comic but also to see Nnedi Okorafor writing it. This first issue is all about background and setting the stage for what comes next. Don‘t want to spoil anything but I‘m definitely excited to spend more time in Wakanda and see where this story goes. Looking forward to reading more!
