I found this to be a really powerful book. Gillian Trigg is an inspirational woman, who not only overcame her own gender discrimination but in her role as the President of the Human Rights Commission fought to eliminate discrimination.

She explains legal specifics in relatable terms. And reminds me that we still have a work to do in terms of discrimination.

I did this as an audiobook and loved that it was read by the author.

So after many hours, one coat of stain and three coats of varnish, my bookshelves are finished. I've really enjoyed the process and the time to listen to some fantastic audiobooks. Now to give them time to dry. Cannot wait to fill them.

Having followed her story in the Australian media and seen her speak at a recent Writer‘s Festival, I was keen to read this memoir.
Triggs covers human rights regarding refugees, Aborigines, women, Muslims, Marriage Equality and more.
She makes a case for why Australia has strayed from human rights principles and advocates for a charter or bill or rights to help guide us back on track.

In 2007 the Australian government suspended the operation of the Commonwealth Racial Discrimination Act (1975) in order to intervene to ‘protect children‘ in the Northern Territory.

The government seized control of many aspects of the daily lives of residents in remote Aboriginal communities. 😢⬇️

🤔 I recently saw Gillian Triggs speak on this issue. She seemed hopeful that if elected the Australian Labor Party, under Bill Shorten‘s leadership, would work to develop such a charter or bill of rights. 🤞🇦🇺

CarolynM I'm old enough to remember the last time we tried this (it was Gareth Evans's baby as A-G). When the small constitutional changes they wanted got rejected (and I will never understand why people voted against requiring the States to pay them compensation for compulsory acquisitions) they kind of just gave up. The chances of getting any kind of bipartisanship theses days is zero and without it you won't get public support for things like this. 5y

CarolynM That doesn't mean I don't think we should have a Bill of a Rights, just that I think it's an unrealistic goal while our politics are the way they are. 5y

MrsMalaprop @Freespirit I‘m a third in. A little dry at times, but a worthwhile read in terms of developing my understanding of why human rights are currently not properly protected and about her time as HRC President. 5y
