Walking by Night
Walking by Night | Kate Ellis
10 posts | 3 read | 5 to read
Fifth intriguing mystery in the atmospheric Joe Plantagenet police procedural series Taking a short cut home beneath the ruined abbey in the centre of the city, a teenage girl reports stumbling across a body. She also claims to have seen a mysterious nun-like figure watching her from the shadows. But during the subsequent search, no body is found. The girls inebriated state and her troubled history make the police sceptical of her story, and only Detective Inspector Joe Plantagenet is inclined to believe her. Then a woman is reported missing, and Joe finds himself caught up in a complex investigation involving a production of The Devils at the local Playhouse. Could the play, with its shocking religious and sexual violence, have something to do with the womans disappearance? And is there really a connection with the tragic death of a young nun at the site many centuries before? Nothing is as it first appears.

On her way home on a foggy night, Debby Telerhaye is convinced she is being followed. Trying to hide she finds a body but by the time she raises the alarm it has disappeared. The body of an actress in a stage production of “The Devils“ is found in the nearby abbey ruins the next day.

Not as spooky as others in the series, but still full of twists and turns. Rather sad that 8 years on it's presumably the last one but without any sense of closure.

Had a week off week that allowed me to have a very successful week‘s reading.

Week 44/52 2018 - #BookStats
9 Books Finished, 3149 Pages Read

#LitsyAtoZ 0 (25/26) - Only X left, which I have now started.
#MountTBRChallenge 3 (42/52)
#YearoftheChunkster 0 (25/26)
#SeriesUptoDate 2 (18/20)
#SeriesFinished 1 (6/20)
#ListyPassport 0 (2/12)

Close to finishing 3 challenges, but a lot of reading still to do in the other 3

CMB What did you think of the ending of The Miniaturist? I have issues coming to terms with it 🤷🏻‍♀️. Loved Still Life! 6y
Pamwurtzler Wow looking good! 👍🏻 6y
Andrew65 @CMB Totally sad! Why not get treatment for the sister. Was also waiting for a last minute reprieve for the husband. After that it felt like a bit of a non ending and needed to know what happened next. 6y

Andrew65 @Pamwurtzler Thanks 😊 6y
TrishB Just read Still Life and the second one and ordered a few more in the series.... 6y
Andrew65 @TrishB Most probably get to book 2 in December, no space to get to it in November! 6y
Jee_HookedOnBookz How on earth did you do that!!??? 9 books in a week??!! That's a feat for me! The most I can do in a month is 7!!😅 6y
Andrew65 @Jee_HookedOnBookz A lot of focused reading time, and one of the books I was virtually finished going into the week and another I was half way through. The holiday from work and other commitments helped. Plus roughly 8 hours reading on average every day. We also have cut out all tv for reading time. Both my wife and I are voracious readers and the children have flown the nest. (edited) 6y
Jee_HookedOnBookz @Andrew65 tq for sharing Andrew! Oh wow 8 hrs per day! 💪👍🏼👏 Hats off to you and your wife! Do the both of you have similar tastes in books? 6y
Andrew65 @Jee_HookedOnBookz Yes in the main we will read the same books with just a little variance. Allows for great discussions! 6y
Jee_HookedOnBookz @Andrew65 that's just so awesome!!! ❤️❤️❤️ 6y
BookNerd9906 What did you think of Ladder to the Sky? Is it as good as Heart‘s Invisible Furies? It‘s on my #tbr 6y
Andrew65 @BookNerd9906 Still to read Hearts Invisible Furies (book recalled to library before I could finish it) but loved Ladder To The Sky, one of my favourites this year. Only complaint, too short, I wanted more. 😊 (edited) 6y

I read this series with a group on LibraryThing and we have enjoyed each installment. Very sad to see the series coming to an end. Joe Plantagenet needs to have some type of meaningful relationship. Past secrets need to be revealed. Pick up first book, Seeking the Dead, and you won't be disappointed. Characters are very believable. Plots are quite complex. Lots of twists keep the pages turning. Highly recommend for psychological mystery lovers!

EadieB @Andrew65 Check LibraryThing. We got a reply from Kate. She said that in 1 year or 2 she will write another one but she is working on her Wesley Peterson and historical book contract right now. 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB Yey, will check it out. That‘s great news, but not surprised it didn‘t feel like an end. 6y

EadieB @Andrew65 I think the email prompted her to do something later because she has so many projects she is working on. 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB Shows the authors aren‘t always in control, as just said on Librarything I think we should read the Wesley Peterson series in the meantime. 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 I agree! That is a great idea! 6y

It was great to be back with Joe Plantagenet and Kate‘s writing. Quite a short book (under 250 Pages) but a lot was packed in. Quite an intricate plot and it took a long while (almost to the end) to be able to work out who the murderer was and why. A good hint at the supernatural in this one as usual too. This was the fifth book and three years since it was published. I hope Kate writes more and finds a love interest for Joe. Recommend the series.

Andrew65 The first book in the series is (edited) 6y
Andrew65 Additional information the books are set in Eborby, which is a fictional York, England. (edited) 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 Fell asleep last night trying to finish this so I‘m a bit behind for the questions. 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB You know us, we‘ll comment when you get the chance to finish it and post your responses. 😊 6y

Reached the halfway stage in #24B4Monday #Readathon and today I have been reading the three books in the post. One audiobook, one physical book and one ebook. All feel like good reads. Now other halfway through The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle which is quite a unique book and a unique approach. No books finished yet today.

BeansPage You're doing awesome! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 6y
Andrew65 @TheReadingMermaid Not bad given yesterday was a work day and very tired today. 6y
suzie.reads I don't know how you read so many books at the same time. I like to just focus on one book and enjoy it. 6y

Andrew65 @suzie.reads Didn‘t use to do this but developed as I do group/buddy reads, and as I listen to audiobooks whilst travelling. My brain doesn‘t seem to have any problem compartmentalising them, and always totally engrossed with whatever book when I am reading it. 6y
suzie.reads I like that I just prefer to read one book at at time. I blame my ocd haha 6y
Andrew65 @suzie.reads My Wife is very much like that as well. 6y
suzie.reads I'd love to be able to read for 24 hours but life gets in the way for me so just read when I can 6y

Starting Walking by Night, which is the last book (currently) in the DI Joe Plantagenet Series set in Eborby (Fictional York). These are usually good crime fiction books but with an element of the supernatural in them. Reading this as part of a Group Read on Librarything.

Lmstraubie Sounds intriguing... 6y
Andrew65 @Lmstraubie There are only five in the series but do love the books. 6y
