A sweeping historical novel that spans Germany, England, and the United States and follows a young couple torn apart by circumstance leading up to World War IIand the family secret that may prove to be the means for survival. Love brought them together. But only time can save them 1931, Germany. Bookshop owner Max Beissinger meets Hanna Ginsberg, a budding concert violinist, and immediately he feels a powerful chemistry between them. It isnt long before they fall in love and begin making plans for the future. As their love affair unfolds over the next five years, the climate drastically changes in Germany as Hitler comes to power. Their love is tested with the new landscape and the realities of war, not the least of which is that Hanna is Jewish and Max is not. But unbeknownst to Hanna is the fact that Max has a secret, which causes him to leave for months at a timea secret that Max is convinced will help him save Hanna if Germany becomes too dangerous for her because of her religion. In 1946, Hanna Ginsberg awakens in a field outside of Berlin. Disoriented and afraid, she has no memory of the past ten years and no idea what has happened to Max. With no information as to Maxs whereaboutsor if he is even still aliveshe decides to move to London to live with her sister while she gets her bearings. Even without an orchestra to play in, she throws herself completely into her music to keep alive her lifelong dream of becoming a concert violinist. But the music also serves as a balm to heal her deeply wounded heart and she eventually gets the opening she long hoped for. Even so, as the days, months, and years pass, taking her from London to Paris to Vienna to America, she continues to be haunted by her forgotten past, and the fate of the only man she has ever loved and cannot forget. Told in alternating viewpointsMax in the years leading up to WWII, and Hanna in the ten years afterIn Another Time is a beautiful novel about love and survival, passion and music, across time and continents.

It only took me a day and a half to read this one. It is reminiscent of The Time Traveler's Wife. This is told from 2 POV, Max and Hanna and alternates between pre WWII to the years after the war. It is a story of love, music and survival and told beautifully. 4.5⭐

"Where they burn books, they will, in the end, burn human beings." This excerpt from the play Almansor by Heinrich Heine is in this book. I love when authors use quotes from other works.

I‘m a sucker for historical fiction books around WWII and this one did not disappoint! It pulled at my heartstrings all the way through. I was really hoping for a different ending, but completely understand the direction it took. I will be looking up more by this author because I really enjoyed this one. Also got to finish it up with cuddles from my sweet Luna ❤️🐶

Started this one from our patio in Cinque Terre on our honeymoon and finally getting back to it now! The view is not as nice as it was in Italy, but at least the weather is fantastic on my lunch break ❤️

I am personally a sucker for a WWII story and this one definitely hit a sweet spot for me. One of my favorite books of all time is Outlander by Diana Gabaldon, and this felt like home for me. This had elements of time travel and magical realism, and she did really write this seamlessly.

A novel about a Jewish woman who wakes up in a field missing ten years of her life and the absent German bookstore owner who loved her, the story is told in two timelines: Hanna rebuilding her life post Holocaust and Max telling the story of their lives as Hitler rises to power. There is a small speculative fiction piece to this as well. Full review at https://booknaround.blogspot.com/2019/02/review-in-another-time-by-jillian-canto...

tammysue Great review! Stacked :) 6y
rretzler I am so fascinated by this period in history and there are too few books about the average German citizen and how they managed during wartime, so I‘m always interested when I find one that even remotely seems to fit. 6y
BookNAround @rretzler There‘s actually not much during the war since Max‘s story is in the years leading up to it and Hanna‘s story is after it but there‘s some and it definitely makes you think about what the average German (Jews and Gentiles alike) thought as Hitler became more and more powerful. 6y

Mehso-so

So I went ahead and finished it and while I don‘t hate myself for doing so against my better judgement, the book just kind of left me feeling meh. The characters were ok, the story itself was ok, there was just nothing special about this book that really drew me in or touched my heart. It‘s done.

Now, what to read next?? 🤔🤔

I‘m about half way through this one and as much as I want to enjoy it, I‘m just not. It may make its way back to the library unfinished and maybe I‘ll try again in the future. I hate giving up on books but there are just so many others waiting to be read 🤔. Decisions, decisions. #tobailornottobail #tofinishornot

Moony Oh yes I know this internal monologue 😄 But often the argument, that there are so many cool books in the world is stronger. 6y
Kaila-ann @Moony I‘m sure it‘s a familiar argument to us all 😉. The more I think about it, the more I think that it‘s going to go back to the library. I‘m still not 100% but there are so many books sitting on my shelves that I may adore vs just feeling meh. 6y

The market is saturated with WWII fiction, but there are so many stories to be told. This one had a twist that made it different than the others and really held my attention.

I have read some great books this year, but this one is near the top. A beautiful and bittersweet love story that alternates between 1930s Germany and postwar Europe. I couldn‘t help but get caught up with the characters, especially Hanna, an aspiring Jewish violinist. The parallels to anti-Semitism today are eerie. Review on LibraryThing, as I got this through Early Reviewer. 5⭐️ for sure.

“Wherever they would burn books, Heine had written, they would burn people too .”

I literally cannot put this book down. The chapters set in Germany in the ‘30s are chilling in their parallels to today.

My next LibraryThing early reviewer book. Looking forward to this, but my TBR seems farther and farther in the distance. It‘s my own fault, though. I need to ignore that early reviewer book list. Yeah, like that‘s really going to happen 😂

The love between Max and Hanna endures throughout the years – each searching for the other. The characters were so real that my heart ached for the lovers who were continually torn apart. This is an emotional haunting story of love and self-sacrifice throughout time and across continents. It‘s a love that cannot be, yet cannot die. The ending was heart-wrenching and will linger with me for some time.
