A conclave to select his replacement is about to begin. Cardinals are beginning to arrive at the Vatican, but one has fled Rome for Malta in search of a document that dates back to the 4th century and Constantine the Great. Former Justice Department operative, Cotton Malone, is at Lake Como, Italy, on the trail of legendary letters between Winston Churchill and Benito Mussolini that disappeared in 1945 and could re-write history. But someone else seems to be after the same letters and, when Malone obtains then loses them, hes plunged into a hunt that draws the attention of the legendary Knights of Malta. The knights have existed for over nine hundred years, the only warrior-monks to survive into modern times. Now they are a global humanitarian organization, but within their ranks lurks trouble the Secreti an ancient sect intent on affecting the coming papal conclave. With the help of Magellan Billet agent Luke Daniels, Malone races the rogue cardinal, the knights, the Secreti, and the clock to find what has been lost for centuries. The final confrontation culminates behind the walls of the Vatican where the election of the next pope hangs in the balance.

EadieB This was a very good book by Steve Berry. Cotton Malone is on the trail of letters between Churchill and Mussolini. He is also interested in finding the Nostra Trinita which the Church is very interested in too. The book is about WWII history, Catholic Church history, the Knights of Malta, and the process of electing a pope and the operations of the Vatican. 1mo
EadieB The book takes us to the geography, scenery, and history of Northern Italy and the Island of Malta. The book is a bit different than the plot of his other books but has a few twists and turns to add to the enjoyment. I'm looking forward to the next installment from Steve Berry as I do like his books. If you like history then you will love to read this book. 1mo

I am a big fan of Steve Berry and was somewhat disappointed. The history was less interesting and the action seemed forced. An okay read for fans but not one I would recommend.

I had stacks of books set aside by my bed for #readingeurope2020 but wanted to get them into shelves. So I made this cheat sheet so I‘d know where to find them (by author‘s last name). And bonus, they‘re off the floor.

GingerAntics You are so well organised!!! 4y
BarbaraBB Great list. I took a screenshot for inspiration 💚 4y
Texreader @GingerAntics Oh I wish. The family would die laughing if they saw that comment. It‘s a fight against my most disorderly self to try to bring order to chaos. 4y

If you're a fan of the Cotton Malone series, then I recommend this book, if not then you may be lost when it comes to some of the characters and their backstory. The overall plot of the book is good, but this isn't the best in the series. If you a fan of Steve Berry and Cotton Malone I recommend it but if you haven't kept up with Cotton's adventures then I would say skip it until you're caught up. Still a good book for fans of the series though.

Reecaspieces I think he needs to move away from Cotton. This series has gotten blah for me 5y
midath75 I'm at the very beginning of that same feeling. I'd like to see more stories around Cassiopeia or a backstory on Stephanie Nell. (edited) 5y

🍭🍭🍭 review is up on my blog. Stop by and say hi. https://reecaspieces.com/2019/03/16/the-malta-exchange-by-steve-berry-review-fic.... Not as good as some or as bad as others.

EclecticBookLover I have similar feelings about Steve Berry. I've only read a handful and they are mostly later Cotton Malone books. I think my favorite was The King's Deception. I heard him speak at a library conference and he's a wonderful speaker. Worth seeing if you get the chance. 5y
Reecaspieces @EclecticBookLover I have seen him once. He is super intelligent. Highly recommend his earlier reads. The amber room is fantastic 5y

I have read every book in the Cotton Malone series. And, overall, I have loved and enjoyed them all. But, the series is beginning to fade for me. Too many chase scenes and lots of formulaic plotting make this less exciting than it used to be. The historical subplots have made the books stay fresh for me, but the Knights of Malta in the current book feels repetitive of so many Templar books out there. #netgalley
