Thanks A Thousand
Thanks A Thousand: A Gratitude Journey | A. J. Jacobs
17 posts | 13 read | 10 to read
The idea was deceptively simple: New York Times bestselling author A.J. Jacobs decided to thank every single person involved in producing his morning cup of coffee. The resulting journey takes him across the globe, transforms his life, and reveals secrets about how gratitude can make us all happier, more generous, and more connected. Author A.J. Jacobs discovers that his coffeeand every other item in our liveswould not be possible without hundreds of people we usually take for granted: farmers, chemists, artists, presidents, truckers, mechanics, biologists, miners, smugglers, and goatherds. By thanking these people face to face, Jacobs finds some much-needed brightness in his life. Gratitude does not come naturally to Jacobshis disposition is more Larry David than Tom Hanksbut he sets off on the journey on a dare from his son. And by the end, its clear to him that scientific research on gratitude is true. Gratitudes benefits are legion: It improves compassion, heals your body, and helps battle depression. Jacobs gleans wisdom from vivid characters all over the globe, including the Minnesota miners who extract the iron that makes the steel used in coffee roasters, to the Madison Avenue marketers who captured his wandering attention for a moment, to the farmers in Colombia. Along the way, Jacobs provides wonderful insights and useful tips, from how to focus on the hundreds of things that go right every day instead of the few that go wrong. And how our culture overemphasizes the individual over the team. And how to practice the art of savoring meditation and fall asleep at night. Thanks a Thousand is a reminder of the amazing interconnectedness of our world. It shows us how much we take for granted. It teaches us how gratitude can make our lives happier, kinder, and more impactful. And it will inspire us to follow our own Gratitude Trails.

I love everything he writes and this was no different. A quick read and a good reminder of how the simple act of gratitude shared with others can add so much good to the world. 🤓 #gratitude #thankful

Quick and quirky read. I‘ve read all of Jacobs books and this one fit with the others. It was interesting to really think about how many different people are involved in buying a cup of coffee. Simple yet profound thought that does lead to a response of gratitude.

lazydaizee Sounds like an interesting book for people who enjoy coffee. 4y

Short, entertaining, and informative. I heard the TED Talk and picked-up the book at the library.

I‘ve been able to get library books by requesting them, and then making an appointment to pick them up in the parking lot for a few months. Today I was allowed IN THE LIBRARY. It felt like Christmas. There are a ton of safety measures in place that I am happy to comply with. The staff is thrilled to have us back. This changed just yesterday and word has not spread, I was the only patron there during my visit.

This is a project-based memoir about gratitude. Jacobs attempts to thank everyone - and I mean everyone - involved in making his daily cup of coffee happen. Nothing mindblowing in this one, and it doesn't get very deep, but the audiobook was a nice, relaxing listen. #nonfiction #memoir #coffee #gratitude

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I just love AJ Jacobs. His lifestyle experiments are so fun and insightful. This short book about thankfulness is from the TED book series which I didn‘t know existed, so I‘ll be checking out more of those. Here, Jacobs focuses on all the folks it takes to make something he and I both enjoy immensely: coffee. It‘s a good reminder to think about the bigger picture and be appreciative for all the things.

SW-T Love Jacobs, but somehow I missed this one. Shopping trip in my near future! 📚 5y
britt_brooke @SW-T I had completely missed it, too. It was published last November, but I didn‘t learn about it until the most recent Audible sale. It‘s a good, quick, quirky read! 5y

Last year AJ Jacobs released his new book, Thanks a Thousand, where he went on a quest to thank every person involved in the production of his morning cup of coffee. He wanted to thank his fans as a part of that journey of gratitude, so he offered to write 1,000 Thank You postcards for his newsletter subscribers. When I made the request I told AJ that I was struggling with my depression and that a postcard from him would cheer me up. Here it is!

britt_brooke Thank you for sharing this! I love AJ Jacobs. 5y

#nonfiction2019 #inspirational . A short book 102 pages, an extended Ted Talk. It‘s a reminder of the power of gratitude in improving mood , generosity, and connectedness. In this book the author thanks every single person involved in his morning cup of coffee. A reminder of how a simple item in your life connects you with others. I lost interest a bit as story progressed, there‘s only so much “thanking” you can listen to at one time! ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Megabooks I always love coming across your posts. Nonfiction lovers high five ✋🏻 !! 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa Sounds interesting, but yes...a bit too much too. 6y
jb72 Interesting. I may check this out, and while I can appreciate the need for thanks and even some pointers, sometimes it can be overwhelming to listen to someone else talk about it. 6y

AnneFindsJoy @jb72 @riveted_reader_melissa that‘s exactly it! It‘s like the back of books where the author thanks a ton of people over pages and pages, and you just sort of gloss over it! This book started to feel like that a bit! (edited) 6y
AnneFindsJoy @Megabooks 🙌🙌🙌🙌 nonfiction buddies unite :) 6y
jb72 @AnneFindsJoy I also need to update my bujo and post my updates. I think I‘ll do that after I finish my Pratchett nonfiction book. 6y

This is a fun book in which the author literally thanks a thousand people responsible for his morning cup of #coffee (...and mine, as well)!

“More than two billion cups of coffee are drunk every day around the globe. The coffee industry employs 125 million people internationally.”
Thank you, all 125 million of you, for your part in my first delicious cup of coffee this morning. Learning the journey of a bean makes me grateful for every sip.

This was my first book of 2019 because I thought I needed a bit of a blueprint on how to be more grateful in my own life. Jacobs is always interesting and I generally appreciate the stunt quality of his hockey of subjects and this was no different, just shorter.
