This book is written by Jeanette Winter that talks about a true story from Afghanistan.Nasreen's father and mother have been taken from her in the night and she is so upset she stops communicating with others. Her grandmother puts her into a secret school where Nasreen is able to learn with other young girls. Nasreen and her grandmother miss the rest of their family, but the continue on and keep their distance form the soldiers who roam the street.

clairebourq_2023 Nasreen continues going to school and builds a relationship with another young girl who she finally opens up to. She is able to see the beauty in the world again while still missing her family. This story is so moving and I would absolutely read to children. They are given the ability to explore other parts of the world and become more worldly.

Nasreen's Secret School was written in 2009 by Jeanette Winter. This book is a beautiful story that talks about losing family members to the Taliban soldiers. It talks about how young women suffered educationally, and how some were fortunate enough to secretly educate themselves without the soldiers knowing. It has won the Jane Addams Children's book award. Great read!

This book is about a girl from Afghanistan. It at first portrays life for women in the country and how they are really just seen as house wife‘s. One day soldiers came to her house and took her parents away. Her grandma then worked to get her into a secret school. By the end of the book she had learned to read and write and do math. She had an education. Great read!

⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐5 ⭐
This true story of a little girl (name has been changed for her protection) who is sent to school in secret as a way to cope with the loss of her mother and father is inspiring. This is a true story from when the Taliban ruled Afghanistan and women had most of their rights taken away, including the right to an education. This is not a happy book, but rather a story of what you sometimes have to do to cope with the atrocities of life.

LibrarianRyan . This book has been banned and challenged multiple times. There are parents that think this book is too violent for their children to read. Iit is not! the most violent thing is Nasrenn‘s uncle gets taken. Still other parents get upset because this book is not about the Christian lifestyle and dares to include an Islamic prayer and mention of the Koran. How dare they!! And how dare you not read this book. This is the type of story we should 2y
LibrarianRyan be sharing with kids, both now and in the future so we do not repeat history, or so that others know, this was real. These events were not made up!

The true story of Nasreen, whose name has been changed to protect her. Under Taliban rule in Afghanistan Nasreen‘s parents go missing. She retreats inside herself & stops speaking. Her grandmother has heard of a secret school for girls & sends her. Even though she is afraid the soldiers will discover the school, she wants Nasreen to have the opportunity to learn just like she had. School brings Nasreen back to herself & she starts talking again.

#BloomingBibliophiles Day 9: This picturebook biography fits the #YellowCover prompt. Told from the voice of Nasreen‘s grandmother, this is a story of fear, loss, quiet defiance, and hope. Nasreen‘s father was captured by the Taliban without any explanation. After days and nights of waiting, Nasreen‘s mother risked everything to go and look for him. Since then, Nasreen has not spoken a word. My review: https://wp.me/pDlzr-dqf

I got carried away reserving #bannedbooks at my library. Some of them, including this one, were children's books. This one is a true story about a little girl in Afghanistan whose Father was taken by soldiers and is left with her grandma when her mother goes in search of him. She refuses to speak until she meets a friend at a secret school that is being run for girls. Quite interesting and I would not think twice about letting a child read it.

I'm making my way through the ALA's top 10 Most Frequently Challenged Books of 2015. This picture book is a wonderful story of the resilience of women under Taliban rule. Reasons for Challenges: Religious viewpoint, unsuited for age group, and violence.
