I listened to Hazards of Time Travel, a mildly-engaging version of a familiar dystopian story. Adriana is sent back to the past when she questions the status quo during her valedictorian speech. It is not long-lastingly memorable, but is like to try another novel by Joyce Carol Oates.

“Hazards of Time Spent Reading a Boring Book”
A protagonist who is irritating and I couldn‘t relate to or sympathise for, with a story that is not very good. The events that this dystopian future had emerged from being the immediate aftermath of 9/11 made for a quickly aged concept, but yeah, mostly just totally boring and annoying. Had to skim the last half and was glad I hadn‘t spent more time with it.

I finished listening to this one yesterday. 5 ⭐️. Loved it! JCO is amazing!

Not sure how I‘ve never read any Joyce Carol Oates books before considering how many she‘s written! But randomly picked this up at the library and read the first 20‘pages or so. Not sure if it‘s going to be too science fiction-y for me but will stick with it for now.

I chose to read this novel because it was a dystopian novel that came out last year that got a bit of buzz and excitement around its release and it got really bad reviews. I don‘t think that the bad reviews are warranted. You can read why on my blog post because it can't all fit in this tiny space!

Finished my coffee and finished my book. This one addressed some good questions about free will, deepfake videos, the nature of reality, and the ways in which we're complicit in creating our own limitations, but it left me wanting. I wrote a longer review on my blog, but this is the gist.

I wanted to like this more......

What the what? I mean....that ending was not satisfactory. The rest of the book was decent, though I don't really like her style (my first book by this author). But a big no to that ending! Too many questions remaining.

Reading tonight. Set in both a future America, where the state controls all aspects of life including your ability to question and in 1959 Wisconsin, where those dissenters are sent for rehabilitation. By a master of storytelling, so I‘m excited to be reading it.

With the attitude of Book Of Essie and the governmental control of Hunger Games, a frightening & overtly sexist and extremely racist world tries to intimidate the main character, teenager Adriane, as she is exiled to the 80 years in the past. Though I felt the same unsettling feeling I had while reading Louise Erdrich‘ a Future Home of the Living God (which I also didn‘t like very much), I thought this was a book full of missed opportunities.

Okay...this is going to be my last shot with Joyce Carol Oates. I know she's an amazing author and writes wonderful books, but I have tried to read a few of them over the years and just can't connect with her writing for whatever reason. 😞 But her newest one looks to be some kind of sci fi/dystopian story, so I'm going to give her one last shot! 😃💕

Compulsively readable Orwellian novel. 4 🌟! This was my first Joyce Carol Oates...what should I read of hers next?

Just started this on Scribd...it has hooked me right away. Feels like Orwell's 1984. I am interested in what direction we will head in this story. It is also my first Joyce Carol Oates.

I finally found the new location of the book giveaway table at my office and lighted on this Arc. Totally gripping though nakedly polemic. Read half of it staying up too late & made myself stop because I wanted to think about what I‘d read.
