The New Childhood
The New Childhood: Raising Kids to Thrive in a Connected World | Jordan Shapiro
8 posts | 4 read | 8 to read
A provocative look at the new, digital landscape of childhood and how to navigate it. In The New Childhood, Jordan Shapiro provides a hopeful counterpoint to the fearful hand-wringing that has come to define our narrative around children and technology. Drawing on groundbreaking research in economics, psychology, philosophy, and education, The New Childhood shows how technology is guiding humanity toward a bright future in which our children will be able to create new, better models of global citizenship, connection, and community. Shapiro offers concrete, practical advice on how to parent and educate children effectively in a connected world, and provides tools and techniques for using technology to engage with kids and help them learn and grow. He compares this moment in time to other great technological revolutions in humanity's past and presents entertaining micro-histories of cultural fixtures: the sandbox, finger painting, the family dinner, and more. But most importantly, The New Childhood paints a timely, inspiring and positive picture of today's children, recognizing that they are poised to create a progressive, diverse, meaningful, and hyper-connected world that today's adults can only barely imagine.

My oldest son is 8 and it‘s a whole new world for us…he‘s growing up on me! I‘m on a mission to understand him and his obsession with screens of all types. I went into this book not knowing what the “spin” would be, so I was surprised at how much Shapiro advocated for the use of technology. I learned a bit and got some reassurance that it‘s normal (and in some ways beneficial) for kids to be obsessive about gaming, social media and YouTube.

TheBookgeekFrau Stacked! ... I have a 2 1/2 yo granddaughter and I'm just baffled at how much has changed for kids since I raised my own daughter!! I'm supposed to be old and wise damn it🤣😂🤣 8mo
BarbaraBB In some ways certainly. But I still am disappointed that my kids didn‘t end up being readers (except during holidays). God knows I tried 😂 but it‘s always the screens 🤦🏻‍♀️ 8mo
Chelsea.Poole @TheBookgeekFrau oh I know! Even in just the 25 years between my childhood and my kids‘ is outrageously different. Our technology is advancing at rapid speeds and parenting has changed because of it! 8mo
Chelsea.Poole @BarbaraBB oh I feel you! I‘ve got an 8 year old who likely has dyslexia so the harder I push books the more frustrated we both become 😢 but I have hopes for my 6 year old who has much more of an interest, if he can sit still long enough 😆 8mo

Waiting room reading...this ought to distract me from the cost of both teenagers‘ braces 😬

I feel that this book was written more for technophobic parents, which I don't identify as at all. I'm very pro-technology, but I do limit my children's screen time. This book has great advice for interactively teaching our children how to navigate a technological world and advocates for guiding them rather than just allowing them free rein to experience it on their own.

Waiting for basketball practice to finish. Kinda bummed I forgot my highlighter... I usually end up forgetting what I wanted to highlight by the time I get back home! 😏

Also, I obviously need to wash my car... Or at least the windows 😂

I've always struggled with finding the right balance between enough technology to prepare my kids to succeed in the future and too much technology where they can't entertain themselves or know what it's like to be bored or have patience. I'm hoping to find some answers here. And looking for other book recommendations on this topic- I'm eyeing "Bored and Brilliant" as a possible contender for my next read.

readinginthedark It's such a difficult balance! 5y
