Gravity Is the Thing
Gravity Is the Thing: A Novel | Jaclyn Moriarty
The adult debut from bestselling, award-winning Jaclyn Moriartya frequently hilarious, brilliantly observed novel in the spirit of Maria Semple, Rainbow Rowell, and Gail Honeymanthat follows a single mothers heartfelt search for greater truths about the universe, her family and herself. Twenty years ago, Abigail Sorensons brother Robert went missing one day before her sixteenth birthday, never to be seen again. That same year, she began receiving scattered chapters in the mail of a self-help manual, the Guidebook, whose anonymous author promised to make her life soar to heights beyond her wildest dreams. The Guidebooks missives have remained a constant in Abis lifea befuddling yet oddly comforting voice through her familys grief over her brothers disappearance, a move across continents, the devastating dissolution of her marriage, and the new beginning as a single mother and caf owner in Sydney. Now, two decades after receiving those first pages, Abi is invited to an all-expenses paid weekend retreat to learn the truth about the Guidebook. Its an opportunity too intriguing to refuse. If Everything is Connected, then surely the twin mysteries of the Guidebook and a missing brother must be linked? What follows is completely the opposite of what Abi expectedbut it will lead her on a journey of discovery that will change her lifeand enchant readers. Gravity Is the Thing is a smart, unusual, wickedly funny novel about the search for happiness that will break your heart into a million pieces and put it back together, bigger and better than before.

This is the story of Abigail, her family‘s loss and the lasting impact that loss had on her, her family, and her relationships. I have a feeling this book will garner some negative reviews, but I found it engaging and humorous.

I loved this book. I loved the voice of the main character, the whimsical writing, and the witty observations of the highs and lows of Abi‘s life. I want to be friends with Abi, and the descriptions of 5 year old boy vocabulary was wonderful. Although there are sad portions, this book filled me with such joy as I read it.

This was my book club‘s pick this month and I just didn‘t enjoy this one. It‘s a brand new release and I was excited to read it, but when I finished, I felt like I had no idea what I read or what the point was. The writing was just disjointed and off for me and I couldn‘t get into it at all. And the harder I tried, the slower it seemed to get.

Booktastic I love Liane's books, but I tried one by the other sister, Nicola, and it wasn't great. Sorry this wasn't a good read! 3mo
Victoriahoperose @Booktastic I do too! I didn‘t even realize that this was her sister. I should have put two and two together since it was set in Australia. I just didn‘t like the storyline or the way it was written. But, maybe it‘s just me!! 3mo

This is my favorite book of the 30 listed on the #MMD Summer Reading List. It gets 5-stars from me because it was so very unique. The writing style was brilliant and the subject matter was totally relatable to me. I still have 10 books to read from the list but I doubt any will top this one.

mcipher Oooh, I didn‘t know she had an adult book - I‘ve loved a few of her YA so I definitely have to pick this up! 4mo
suvata @mcipher I think this is her first adult book and it‘s fabulous. 4mo

Mostly I wanted to play around with overlay and posting quotes. But having lived through the 2KY panic, I connected with this paragraph. #listyquote #jaclynmoriarty #artistformallyknownasprince

DGRachel I worked for a business-to-business telemarketing firm in 1999-2000 and one of our biggest clients was Compaq. I must have spent 6 months doing lead generation for their Alpha Server division, asking people if their computer systems were Y2K compliant. 🙄 8mo
