Chasing Redbird (Bound for Schools & Libraries)
Chasing Redbird (Bound for Schools & Libraries) | Sharon Creech

Zinnia Taylor has looked at those words, embroidered on a sampler hanging in her aunt Jessie's kitchen, for as long as she can remember. In her 13 years Zinny has rummaged through the spaghetti of her life, hoping for a meatball, but often finding lumps of mud instead.Zinny lives in Bybanks, Kentuckey, with too many brothers and sisters -- a mess of "tadpoles" and "pumpkins" is what her uncle Nate calls them. When Zinny discovers a mysterious, overgrown trail that begins on her family's farm, she's determined to clear it, from start to finish. She's finally found a place of her own, a place where she can go, away from her family, to hear herself think. But what Zinny didn't realize is that the mysteries of the trail are intertwined with her own spaghetti of unanswered questions and family secrets, and that the trail -- and her passion to uncover -- is leading her on a journey home.Newberry Medal winnner Sharon Creech's new novel is a powerful, beautifully crafted story about a young girl discovering that life is a tangle of mysteries, surprises and everyday occurences -- a journey that often needs unravelling and that sometimes must be traveled alone.

I can see why this was my daughter‘s favorite book when she was young. The MC is independent & adventurous, as she has always been. A delightful story.

Some of my very favorite moments of making my book podcast happen when I pick up a book for the show that I think I *probably* read as a kid but that I don‘t have especially strong feelings about, only to find that the story is basically embedded in my brain from two decades ago. Isn‘t it wild how that happens? I experienced that when I picked up Chasing Redbird for this week‘s episode and it was a total joy. Click the link in my bio to listen!

🎾 🏐 🥎 Until I was 35 or so, I played tennis, volleyball, and softball. I religiously followed pro tennis. Favorites were John McEnroe and Gabriella Sabatini
🙏🏻 For audiobooks-they‘ve changed my life

I love how this story starts with a bowl of spaghetti as a metaphor for life. 🍝 Sometimes it's a tangled mess, but then sometimes you experience something wonderful.

I've read a couple of Sharon Creech's picture books to my 6th graders as introduction and today they got their novels to start reading. One group is reading Chasing Redbird and the other is reading Ruby Holler, so I'm rereading as well.

Read a book you've read before. I read Chasing Redbird in third grade and still remember lines and scenes from it. Listened to it in one go while working in the garden. I guess it made an impression on nine year old me. It's about a 13 year old girl who spends the summer uncovering/working on a 20 mile trail. She camps and works all day all by herself and only goes home every ten days so her parents know she's not dead. #readharderchallenge

I don't really like re-reading books, but these are the only ones I will make an exception for. All of them I read as a kid several times and I revisit them every few years.
- Tails of Terror
- Digging to the Center of the Earth
- The Haunting if Hathaway House
- Chasing Redbird
- Runaway Ralph
- Pearls of Lutra
- Harry Potter
