The author of this book is of the same ethnic background as his main character, Leo Desroches: one Cree parent & one French-Canadian parent. That in itself provides the protagonist, and by extension, his story, authenticity. However, there‘s not a lot of historical background—we only get the background of Leo and his mother, really. But I was intrigued by Arthurson‘s sense of place: he had me from the first few ⬇️
gradcat ⬆️ pages, when he writes of the plains in the high northern hemisphere and the ways the people have gone about both living and making a living here. Plus, he has written a complicated character in Leo. His is a colorful background, not all straight, but not so crooked as to be a hopeless case...yet. As a newspaper reporter, Leo gets involved in a spree of murders, and is in on solving them. This is the first of three books with Leo Desroches. (edited) 5y
