Winter World
Winter World | A. G. Riddle
12 posts | 12 read | 15 to read
The latest pulse-pounding thriller from the author of Pandemicand The Atlantis Gene. The ice is coming. It was the last thing we expected, but the world is freezing. A new ice age has dawned and humanity has been forced to confront its own extinction. Billions have fled the glaciers, crowding out the world's last habitable zones. They can run from the ice, but they can't escape human nature: a cataclysmic war is coming. In orbit, a group of scientists are running the Winter Experiments, a last-ditch attempt to understand why the planet is cooling. None of the climate models they build make sense. But then they discover an anomaly, an unexplained variation in solar radiation... and something else. Close to the burning edge of the sun, they catch a fleeting glimpse of something that shouldn't be there... Suddenly humanity must face the possibility it is not alone in the universe. And the terrifying possibility that whatever is out there may be trying to exterminate us. 'A complex, multi-stranded narrative spanning 700 pages that reads like a superior collaboration between Dan Brown and Michael Crichton' Guardian.

I admit that I was distracted while listening yesterday and I felt the book was quite mid so I gave it a second chance. I listened today and I found it to be quite enjoyable with a twisty ending.

I realize the science may not be on point but ya know what … IT‘S FICTION 😁 I enjoyed a story where humanity wins. Where humans are kind and the evil is alien.

I‘m listening to book 2 next month. Yes, I started another series …

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

I usually really love these end of the world climate dystopia novels. And this one was ok, I guess. The science seemed a bit questionable, but I can generally overlook that in fiction. But the story was just missing something. Can't put my finger on what, but I won't be continuing with the rest of the series. It wasn't terrible, just forgettable.

Thank you for the tag @ShelleyBooksie!

1. I don't really read series. It requires a level of commitment I'm unprepared for. However, I just started the tagged book which is part of a 3 book series. I also ordered Edge of Collapse by Kyla Stone first book in a 7 book series. I guess I'm maturing.
2. Yes. I'm impatient.
3. It depends on the topic & how interesting the ancillary characters are. With the right story, either can work.

@ozma.of.oz

BookmarkTavern I do like when a book series switches over to a side character that I wanted more of! Thanks for posting! 3y

Okay #littens I need your help. I have Positional Vertigo ☹️ and need to be still for 2-3 days only watching TV or listening to #audiobooks. (Not being able to read or journal might kill me. 😔)
I NEED GOOD AUDIO BOOK RECOMMENDATIONS. I've been trying Winter World and although I like the story and want to read the book the people reading aren't stellar. (In my opinion). HELP!! 🤓

aperfectmjk The cast of narrators is excellent for this one. 4y
aperfectmjk I also like Santino Fontana as a narrator. 4y
aperfectmjk This was probably the most impressive audiobook I've listened to, but it's horror. It's not for everyone. The narrator really captivated the characters well. 4y

SheReadsAndWrites I can't do scary books. 😬 I'm SO SORRY!! 😕 @aperfectmjk 4y
JennyM The narration for these was fab - Queenie and The Midnight Library. Look after yourself. Hope you are feeling better soon Xxx 4y
Avanders Hope you feel better quickly! What kinds of genres? Some I loved: 4y
Avanders Ya sci-fi l 4y
Avanders Ditto 4y
Avanders Fantasy (not ya) 4y
Avanders Oh I should add that I listen to almost everything at 1.5 speed. But I understand from @BethM that that doesn‘t necessarily change the recommendation 😁 She may also have a few for you... 4y
SheReadsAndWrites Thank you SO MUCH! @aperfectmjk @JennyM @Avanders ❤️🤓 I will take a look at these....I'm so grateful audio books exist since I can't read! 4y
SheReadsAndWrites I pretty much read everything but Horror/Scary and Science Fiction. 😊 @Avanders 4y
SheReadsAndWrites And I appreciate the advice on listening speed. What does that change, exactly? Do they just sound better that way? @Avanders 4y
Avanders Ahh well disregard the sci fi recs then 😁😁 For me (and I‘m a fast talker myself), listening to people read that slow is like pulling teeth. It just feels normal to me at 1.5 speed. I‘m not trying to rush, it‘s just what‘s comfortable for me. But many people prefer the 1.0 speed — I think it‘s just personal preference :) 4y
SheReadsAndWrites Oh cool! I honestly think I would like it faster. I get bogged down when it's too slow. @Avanders And I just got Maybe You Should Talk To Someone. That looks great! 4y
Avanders Oh I hope you love it! It‘s one of my all-time favorites 🥰🥰 4y
Hooked_on_books Thank goodness for audiobooks! Though it looks like your big baby isn‘t happy with your news. 😆 For something funny: 4y
Hooked_on_books For a good thriller: 4y
Hooked_on_books For a cerebral mystery/picture of a community: 4y
aperfectmjk Oh I definitely adjust the playback speed. I also set mine at 1.5x 4y
Hooked_on_books I‘ve enjoyed all these on audio. And the playback speed is just a personal preference and can vary by book. I‘m a 2xer myself but will sometimes push it up to 2.25. Whatever sounds right to your ear. 4y
SheReadsAndWrites Thank you! @Hooked_on_books 😊 And Sabrina has been my rest and snuggle buddy. She was watching the window because my husband was out there (her favorite person) and she had to be inside. She was NOT happy about that. 😂 4y
aperfectmjk If you haven't tried this one, it might be a good place to start. It's dark, but not scary. It's engrossing. It's narrated by Santino Fontana 4y
Laughterhp I really enjoyed this series on audio 4y
BethM This whole series is fun on audio! 4y

rockpools Oh no! Feel better soon! 4y
SheReadsAndWrites Right??? @Clare-Dragonfly I am really enjoying this audiobook though. I'm not usually an audiobook person but I like it! 4y

Okay so this book hit a hard dive for me about 30% in but I stuck it out and it got better. Thank you for audiobooks though because had I been reading this with my eyes, I would have quit. I liked it in the end. It wasn‘t predictable.

This book was a complete surprise. At first I thought it would be a dud but soon I was so caught up with the characters that I did not want it to end. It's a trilogy... So it continues

Just signed up! Super excited for this! I‘m putting myself on a swap ban because I need to save up for my yoga teacher training this summer so this will be a great replacement! See @StayCurious for details! And someone else but I can‘t remember who- sorry!

Really digging this author right now. This is the first of a duology (next one out in Jun I believe). The story is simple: the world is freezing, a new ice age is descending rapidly; humanity forced to relocate; scientists trying to figure out what is causing it; strange anomaly discovered close to the sun; what the fudge?! Loved every minute of this story, great sci-fi fare
