Reminiscent of the best novels of Stephen King and Dean Koontz, AFRAID is the first novel from Headline's newest thriller author.Welcome to Safe Haven. Population 907.Nestled in the woods of Wisconsin, Safe Haven is miles from everything. With one road in and out, this is a town so peaceful it has never needed a full-time police force. Until now...A helicopter has crashed on the outskirts of town and something terrible has been unleashed. A classified secret weapon programmed to kill anything that stands in its way. Now its headed for the nearest lights to do what it does best. Isolate. Terrorize. Annihilate.Soon all phone lines are dead and the road is blocked. Safe Havens only chance for survival rests on the shoulders of an aging county sheriff. And as the body count rises, the sheriff realizes something even more terrifying - maybe death hasnt come to his little town by accident...Welcome to Safe Haven. Population 907... 906... 905...

Turns out the town of Safe Haven is pretty dangerous and downright scary when on an unsuspecting night this small town gets infiltrated by a red ops team. This read like a late 90s to mid 00s action movie. I felt myself wriggling through it as there is a lot of body horror. Toes getting bit off, pinkies twisted all the way around, ankles being grabbed as people try to escape. Thanks so much, Margie, for this. I can see why you have that 👇🏼

Reggie scary popcorn memory. My scary popcorn memory is pictured above from Attack of the Killer Clowns from Outer Space where they shoot popcorn at you but later it grows into those monsters. Lol, anyways, this was a pick! 4y
Bookzombie Great review! Yeah, it is a bit gory. I think about the toes sometimes too. Also, all the bodies in the locker room (I think it‘s locker room). I have never seen that movie, lol. 4y
Reggie @Bookzombie I totally thought of you and this book today because I went to go get the first vaccine shot and it was in a high school gymnasium and we were all lined up and being taken behind partitions. Reminded me of the whole they all thought they won the lottery gym scene in here. Lol 4y
Bookzombie @Reggie OMG! That would make me think of this too. Lol 4y

A helicopter crashes in the woods outside of Safe Haven, Wisconsin and a terrifying red-ops team is unleashed upon the small town. The killings are graphic and gruesome. The body count is very high. This book is just as unputdownable as the first time I read it and it‘s also not for the faint hearted. #screamathon #screamathonchallenge #murder

Chrissyreadit This sounds good! 5y
Bookzombie @Chrissyreadit It is, but very graphic. 🙂 5y
Chrissyreadit @Bookzombie more than the stand? I don‘t mind some graphic, the torture in outlander is my limit, and torture of children- any comparison? 5y
Bookzombie @Chrissyreadit I haven‘t actually read The Stand yet. I read Outlander, but it has been a while. It‘s not a spoiler to say there is some biting, burning, and cutting up. There is a kid and things get scary for him, but I don‘t recall him being tortured. 5y

Ooof. What to say about this book. I couldn't put it down. In fact, I read it in a day. But it was pretty gruesome. The entire time I was reading it, I was thinking, "Jolene, this is not good for your brainspace."

Josie The Ruins is one of my all time favorites! 9y
