How Could She
How Could She: A Novel | Lauren Mechling
11 posts | 13 read | 20 to read
An assured and savagely funny novel about three old friends as they navigate careers, husbands, an ex- fianc, new suitors, and, most importantly, their relationships with one another "I know these women; I am these women." --Stephanie Danler, author of Sweetbitter "As wise and unforgiving as a nineteenth-century French novel." --Elif Batuman, author of The Idiot After a devastating break-up with her fianc, Geraldine is struggling to get her life back on track in Toronto. Her two old friends, Sunny and Rachel, left ages ago for New York, where they've landed good jobs, handsome husbands, and unfairly glamorous lives (or at least so it appears to Geraldine). Sick of watching from the sidelines, Geraldine decides to force the universe to give her the big break she knows she deserves, and moves to New York City. After she arrives, though, and zigzags her way through the downtown art scene and rooftop party circuit, she discovers how hard it is to find her footing in a world of influencers and media darlings. Plus, the magazine where Sunny and Rachel work is on the brink of folding. Rachel is struggling to juggle her life as a writer, wife, and new mother--how is it that she was more confident and successful at twenty-five than in her mid-thirties? And Sunny's life as a popular West Village tastemaker is not nearly as charmed as it seemed to Geraldine from Toronto. Perhaps worst of all, why are Sunny and Rachel--who've always been suspicious of each other--suddenly hanging out without Geraldine? Hilarious and fiercely observed, How Could She is a novel of female friendship, an insider's look into the cutthroat world of New York media--from print to podcasting--and a witty exploration of the ways we can and cannot escape our pasts. In Geraldine, Sunny, and Rachel, Mechling exposes how women can pragmatically manipulate one another in life and in love, and how the glamour, energy, and hope of New York City doesn't deliver for everyone, but sometimes, in the most unexpected and delightful moments, embraces those who have just the right amount of hope and delusion.

The story of three friends. How they come together and apart. And how their lives lead them away from each other and back.

For some reason I was compelled to finish this book and should not have bothered, as it‘s a mess. Flat, inconsistent characters with unrealistic arcs and minimal pointless plot. Just don‘t bother.

At least I had a snuggly lap puppy while reading. #dogsofLitsy #Bindi

Cinfhen You need to learn the art of bailing!!!!!! 💕😘 5y
Hooked_on_books @Cinfhen I‘m definitely willing to bail on books but for some reason I didn‘t want to with this one. I think it may be because my library system got it for me from another library and I felt bad about returning it without finishing (as if they would know). I also hoped maybe it would redeem itself. Alas, it did not. 🤷🏼‍♀️ 5y
ljuliel I‘ve often thought it‘d be neat if the libraries had a month where they required short book reports on every book you check out that month. I‘d be in trouble for sure, since I‘m such a mood reader , I take books back often that I don‘t finish. 5y

Cinfhen That‘s funny @ljuliel @Hooked_on_books That sounds like JEWISH GUILT 😂😂😂 5y
Hooked_on_books @ljuliel Ha! That‘s hilarious. I can imagine how that would go over! 😆 And @Cinfhen you‘re close—I was raised Catholic. Also well known for their guilt. 5y
Cinfhen Same difference 😉 5y

Two attempts! The first time was when I took a copy out of the library, the second was on audio book and it did not fare any better. This should be in my wheelhouse. Told from multiple POV‘s from thirty-something women, trying to make in NYC. However, for the entire length of this book all I could think was I am so glad I am not one of these women or associate with one of them.

Super satirical with small hits of meaningful moments strewn in; I‘m left with a strong dislike for all these characters gets- BUT- I think that might be part of the point.

Next up for the @deweysreadathon! I‘m getting ready to start this one, and also trying to decide what to eat for lunch. It‘s such a beautiful day here in Maine. I‘m so happy the sun came out earlier than expected. ☀️❤️📚#readathon
