Val McDermid is a world-class crime writer whose books have sold millions worldwide. Now joining the Atlantic Monthly Press list for the first time, she is back with a chilling, high-velocity thriller featuring her immensely popular creations, clinical psychologist Dr. Tony Hill and detective Carol Jordan. Tony Hill has had a good run. He and detective Carol Jordan have put away scores of dangerous criminals at a rate that colleagues envy. But there is one serial killer who has shaped and defined their careers, and whose evil surpasses all others: Jacko Vance, ex-celebrity and sociopath whose brilliance and utter lack of remorse have never left Tonys mind in the ten years since his imprisonment. Now Jacko has escaped from prisoneven more twisted and cunning than before, he is focused on wreaking revenge on Tony and Carol for his years spent in prison. Tony and Carol dont know when Jacko will strike, or where. All they know is that Jacko will cause them to feel fear like theyve never known. A chilling, utterly gripping tour de force, The Retribution is the ideal introduction or re-introduction to the world of Tony Hill and Carol Jordan. It is an unforgettable read.

Mehso-so

Jacko Vance, serial killer of teenage girls, has been banged up in prison since Book 2. He manages to inveigle his way into a position where he can take the place of a prisoner due to go on day release so he can wreak a plan of revenge.

I can only rate this one as average as the book went on for too long. Tony was definitely off his game, but Carol Jordan really annoyed me. I'm a bit lukewarm about reading the next one after the ending. 3⭐

Cinfhen I‘m finding this prompt is a real hit or miss!!! So glad the book worked for you! Lots of Littens have said they‘ve discovered a new series ❤️🙌🏻 4y
Marni @Cinfhen I had no idea what to do for this prompt. So I found an online list of “the best Tartan Noir” and just went down the list until I found one that my library had available in audiobook. It turned out well for me!! 4y
Cinfhen I used the same approach for some of the prompts/ I‘ve had hits & misses but it‘s better than owning books I‘m not going to read again. 4y
BarbaraTheBibliophage I enjoy McDermid‘s writing and her characters. Glad it worked for you too! 4y

I am HOOKED. I picked a book quite into the series and now want so badly to read the book where they caught the killer currently on the loose!!! My current view. “Nap time” as an excuse for audiobook time

He re-read/listen of these has been great had never done these on audio on this is great. Jacko Vance is one evil character that‘s for sure. Looking forward to the next one ☝️ it‘s good to balance out be cheesiness of Christmas movies with a dark serial killer 😂

Andrew65 Jacko Vance has to be one of my favourite evil characters. 7y

This seventh installment in the Tony Hill/Carol Jordan saga has psychotic celebrity Jacko Vance on the lam and out for revenge. There's another serial killer out there too, just to complicate matters. Tony and Carol's will they won't they relationship hits a new low. Less convoluted than earlier episodes but compulsive reading as always.

When the author seems determined to deal blow after blow to your favourite pair of screwed up cop and profiler. This is getting painful! Give 'em a break already Val!

Samantha.1020 This is an author I have been meaning to try! 8y
Minervasbutler @Samantha.1020 try A Distant Echo or A Place of Execution for starters. Both standalones 8y
Samantha.1020 Thanks! I have A Place of Execution on my shelves already so I will start with it first :) 8y
