Release day! Excited to read this memoir by a Mexican poet. Definitely a great option for a migrant story to read instead of #americandirt

THIS BOOK. Oooof. I know I live in a patriarchy, I know that being in the tech as a woman is still unusual. But the level to which my life is effected every single day because of data that is all based on men was astonishing. I urge everyone, especially men, to pick up this book!!

American Dirt | Jeanine Cummins
post image

There has been a lot of controversy around American Dirt, for good reason. I am the daughter of a Mexican immigrant. What I have read about this book makes me sick to my stomach. The racism towards Latinx in the US has been amplified in the last few years, especially towards Mexicans. This book reinforces negative stereotypes about Mexicans and Mexico that are actively causing damage to my family and those like us... cont‘d

Marni Many of these things aren‘t discernible if you haven‘t spent significant time in the country or with the people. She has a passage that reminds me of racism I dealt with throughout my childhood and caused me trauma is written as a normal conversation. This is not ok. Most people I have spoken with have been receptive to my opinion and experience. I am surprised at the pushback though. It generally has come in the form of “Don‘t tell me... cont‘d 3d
Marni What I can‘t enjoy.” It astonishes me that my real life experience and trauma is being compared to someone‘s enjoyment of a fictional narrative. That being said, I urge you not to read American Dirt. If you want to read a story of the migrant experience pick up a book by an #ownvoices author, like the one in the picture that I have recently purchased. 3d
4thhouseontheleft Stacked! And I just wrote the same first sentence. 😃 This is why I try to read #OwnVoices as much as I can. Or authors that do the work to make sure they get it right when writing stories about other cultures, countries, experiences. 3d
Marni @4thhouseontheleft Great minds! Thank you for being an ally! I appreciate you speaking out and listening to my experience!! 3d
Weaponxgirl Thankyou for posting this, I‘ve only just heard about this book and its controversy and will not be picking it up. 2d

This was a wonderful book and hearing Sally tell her story in her own voice made it even more touching and heartfelt. Could use this for the #booked2020 #setinhollywood prompt, but I‘ve already filled that. Thinking about using it for #parentchildmemoir but there‘s another I want to use for it. What to do?!

Finished this right around midnight bringing my book total this year to 30. My goal had been 18 because last year Reading wasn‘t great so I wanted something doable. This is the most I‘ve read in a year in adulthood! Haven‘t decided what the goal will be for next year, want it attainable but also want to push myself. How do you pick your goal number?

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 This book lived up to the expectations. An absolutely amazing read. I didn‘t have a similar childhood or life as Tara, but the way she spoke about her trauma and how she dealt with it (good and bad) really resonated with me and my trauma. The importance of education was always emphasized in my home, and this book really highlights that.

The problem with reading a book in a series as part of a reading challenge is that you then want to read the rest of the series whether they fit prompts or not. #3 was another great part of this series. I love how she takes a different member of the squad with each book, so they‘re related but also can stand alone.

Finished!!!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

Enjoyed this book and had a hard time putting it down. I am very curious to now watch the movie. So much of the book depended on seeing everything through the main character, who spent most of the book blindfolded. I can‘t imagine how that will translate on screen, but looking forward to it! #read2019
