I'm taking my friend Roxanna, my sisters, and their dog Bella.

First we go to a book and a craft store, then load up on food and drink, and then head to our beachfront condo.

@TheSpineView #Two4Tuesday

TheSpineView Sounds wonderful! Thanks for playing 10mo

A time-capsule gem. A 1951 overview of what was known about the oceans - the sea life, the tides, bathymetry, geology (before plate tectonics!), ocean currents, weather, sediments and salt and oil exploration, and human history. She looks into warming oceans, rising sea levels and how all this effects the weather (in 1951!). It's biology, geology, climate, all wrapped together with the knowledge of that time. And it's elegantly written. Terrific.

Graywacke I was mixed on her first book, Under the Sea Wind, despite its poetic writing (and exceptional reader). I was much more fully taken in this time. 12mo
KathyWheeler I‘m reading Under the Sea Wind right now, and have read The Edge of the Sea. The Sea Around Us is by far my favorite. 12mo
AllDebooks Great review, so glad you enjoyed it x 12mo
Graywacke @AllDebooks thanks 🙂 @KathyWheeler I‘m finding The Edge of the Sea is asking a lot of me. I‘m trying not to let my mind wander too much while I‘m listening. 12mo
KathyWheeler @Graywacke Under the Sea Wind is doing that to me. I‘m reading the ebook and can only read a couple of pages at a time. 12mo

Carson‘s language is lovely here — quite poetic. Kaiulani Lee‘s voice, as narrator, adds to this rhythm. I learned a lot, including how much the oceans influence the temperature of the earth. I wouldn‘t look for really hard science here, but there‘s enough to satisfy a casual reader of nature writing. #audiowalk

The section on how islands are born was interesting. I didn‘t know that sometimes islands will appear for a short time and then disappear. Beautiful day outside. #audiowalk

So far, The Sea Around Us is more a paean to the ocean than it is a science book, although the science is there. Carson has a poetic rhythm here that reminds me of nothing so much as the King James Bible, specifically, “And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.” I‘m about a third of the way through the book, and I‘m enjoying it. #audiowalk

My current audiobook

(With fascinating time-capsule geology. This is written in 1951, a decade before the basic theory of plate tectonics was worked out.)

Bookwormjillk Wow, I didn‘t realize that wasn‘t worked out until relatively recently. 13mo
Graywacke @Bookwormjillk pretty amazing, right? It‘s so fundamental to understanding the earth, but it wasn‘t worked out until after WWII sea floor mapping was available, and, next, once sea floor magnetic striping was discovered (~1963). The idea of continental drift is much older, but lacked a feasible physical mechanism. So Carson correctly doesn‘t bring it up. 13mo
KathyWheeler I just checked this out as my new walking book. 13mo
Graywacke @KathyWheeler cool! Curious what you will think about it. 13mo

#WondrousWednesday

1. A marine biologist thanks to a show on PBS about Rachel Carson.

2. I never use an alarm. I have always just woken up 10 mins before I needed to wake up.

3. Treat others kindly, even if they aren't kind to you. And, animals are people too. 💚

4. Green. Especially Ninja Turtle green. 😁

Thank you both for the tag! @Eggs @MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm

Mehso-so

Over 8 hours of this puzzle were spent listening to The Sea Around Us. The narrator drove me nuts, and I had a hard time paying attention to the story. I‘m giving it a so-so rather than a pan because my experience of the book was not necessarily reflective of Rachel Carson. I would like to reread as a physical book; I think I‘d like it more without the narrator factor.

#QuotsyJuly19 Day 21: #Beach photo taken just this morning as family here in the US brought us for an overnight trip at South Lake Tahoe directly right after a 3 day outdoorsy camping at Coloma Resort here in California. The photo above apparently is already in the Nevada #Beach Campground area. Needless to say, it was a gorgeous day. Now back home in Antioch after a 3 hour drive from this beautiful place.
