Blackberry Winter: A Novel | Sarah Jio
19 posts | 30 read | 19 to read
In 2011, Sarah Jio burst onto the fiction scene with two sensational novels--The Violets of March and The Bungalow. With Blackberry Winter--taking its title from a late-season, cold-weather phenomenon--Jio continues her rich exploration of the ways personal connections can transcend the boundaries of time. Seattle, 1933. Single mother Vera Ray kisses her three-year-old son, Daniel, goodnight and departs to work the night-shift at a local hotel. She emerges to discover that a May-Day snow has blanketed the city, and that her son has vanished. Outside, she finds his beloved teddy bear lying face-down on an icy street, the snow covering up any trace of his tracks, or the perpetrator's. Seattle, 2010. Seattle Herald reporter Claire Aldridge, assigned to cover the May 1 "blackberry winter" storm and its twin, learns of the unsolved abduction and vows to unearth the truth. In the process, she finds that she and Vera may be linked in unexpected ways...

Stopped by the library while I was waiting for one of our kiddos. A nice variety of books so I'm excited to start reading. I'll be starting with Canary Girls for #bookedintime .

Worth reading and deserve a “Pick“ choice. It took a day to finish this book as it was far more than my expectations. 😄

How far we can go to save and protect the ones we love the most? How strong is the unconditional love of the mother to the child?

One solved mystery, love, pain and sacrifice. This book touched my heart and I am looking forward to reading more like this and explore more by Sarah Jio.

Also started this. My “fruit” title for the What‘s in a Name Challenge. I‘ve had it forever in my dreaded (where good books go to be forgotten)

I think this is my favorite Sarah Jio book, so far. It's about a little boy gone missing in 1933, and a reporter that lost her baby a year ago. How digging into the little boy's story helps her heal.

This was my first book for the #ReadingWomenChallenge - a book with a food item in the title. Her books are always good when I want something a little lighter and quicker and they‘re set in Seattle, a city I love.

Sarah Jio has been hit or miss for me....some of hers I‘ve really enjoyed and others have been just lukewarm. I thought this was one of her better ones. She tied the past and present together nicely. A quick but pleasant read.

Spent my evening with a blind date from the library and was pleasantly surprised. A quick, well-paced mystery about a missing boy and a reporter who needs to heal. Definitely heavy-handed in spots and a few too many “lucky” coincidences but the writing kept me engaged and suspended my disbelief.

#SplashIntoSummerReads #day6 #BookAndFruit This is a historical lit novel about a young single mother in 1933 Seattle who comes home from her overnight job to find her 3yrold son gone and his teddy outside in the MayDay snow. Then it moves to Seattle 2010, when a reporter who's on a story about this MayDays snowstorm finds the unresolved case & decides to investigate.

Counting down the hours until I'm back to work by finishing my 4th book in 6 days! This one was equal parts mystery and historical novel, with a dash of romance added. I did end up enjoying it despite the fact that it was way too predictable (I could see the big twist coming from a mile away. I HATE that). A nice, light, entertaining read.

[DELETED] 2232195534 I liked this one pretty well when I read it a couple of years ago. That being said, I remember almost nothing about it now. 8y

I love Sarah Jio's novels, this one tugged on my heartstrings because of the little kid involvement. Jio has a thing for having the past parallel the present & she does it very well. Tissues for this one.
