Housebroken: Admissions of an Untidy Life | Laurie Notaro
23 posts | 19 read | 43 to read
#1 New York Times bestselling author Laurie Notaro isnt exactly a domestic goddessunless that means she fully embraces her genetic hoarding predisposition, sneaks peeks at her husbands daily journal, or has made a list of the people she wants on her Apocalypse Survival team (her husbands not on it). Notaro chronicles her chronic misfortune in the domestic arts, including cooking, cleaning, and putting on Spanx while sweaty (which should technically qualify as an Olympic sport). Housebroken is a rollicking new collection of essays showcasing her irreverent wit and inability to feel shame. From defying nature in the quest to make her own Twinkies, to begging her new neighbors not to become urban livestock keepers, to teaching her eight-year-old nephew about hoboes, Notaro recounts her best effortsand hilarious failuresin keeping a household inches away from being condemned. After all, home wasnt built in a day. Praise for Laurie Notaro Notaro is a scream, the freak-magnet of a girlfriend you cant wait to meet for a drink to hear her latest story. The Plain Dealer If Laurie Notaros books dont inspire pants-wetting fits of laughter, then please consult your physician, because, clearly, your funny bone is broken.Jen Lancaster, author of I Regret Nothing Hilarious, fabulously improper, and completely relatable, Notaro is the queen of funny.Celia Rivenbark, author of Rude Bitches Make Me Tired From the Trade Paperback edition.

Notaro talks about how little she fits in the “domestic goddess” mold while fighting with her chicken-loving neighbors and a tree that hates her house a little too much

Reading is getting slower and sleepier over here...It's 97°, but there's a nice breeze, and if I weren't in an uncomfortable camp chair I would have drifted off to sleep long ago! This essay collection is a good change of pace for me, it's laugh out loud funny, but I'll be switching to audio soon to make dinner. Definitely hitting 24 hours this time! #24in48

If you need to laugh, and I mean laugh hard- you must read this book. It just shows that so much in the human life is the same in the United States. And it makes me think of friends I haven‘t thought of in a ling time. I can‘t wait to read more of her stuff asap, free on Overdrive.

My #nonficpick for November. I didn't love this as much as I thought I would. I did audio, and I didn't care for Notaro's narration. I think it would have been better with a professional narrator. As for the content, it just wasn't that funny to me. Laurie often came across as a real jerk! I just didn't find her abrasive personality funny at all.

A great book of essays. I spent 90% of my time while reading this book laughing out loud. Notaro is brazen, astute, witty, and unapologetic. I‘m pretty sure she‘s my soul sister. For anyone who hasn‘t yet read a book by Notaro, go out now and immediately buy one of her books. Go now. I‘ll wait....

GypsyKat Ok, I‘m convinced! Adding this to my Audible wishlist right now! 6y

“Frankly, if I walk into your house and you don‘t have two hundred books somewhere that you haven‘t read yet, I don‘t trust you.... I barely believe you are human”

I love Laurie Notaro...hilarious, untidy, lover of books. My kind of woman. ❤️

CarolynM She'd love me then!😉 6y
BarbaraJean Love this. She‘d really appreciate my 300+ unread books that are in boxes downstairs, waiting to be moved to our new house this weekend! I felt a little ridiculous packing them all! 6y

TommieMarie74 @CarolynM Me too! Lol 6y
TommieMarie74 @BarbaraJean Don‘t feel ridiculous! I have 300+ and had to move them all last year. I have so many read books too, I had to pack them separately so I wouldn‘t lose track and my dad said “what does the TBR on these boxes mean?” I said “you don‘t wanna know.” 🤦🏻‍♀️ 6y
BarbaraJean @TommieMarie74 Ha! I love it. I packed my TBRs separately as well... I actually apologized to the friend who was helping me pack that morning: “I‘m sorry you just packed four shelves of books I haven‘t read yet...” 😂 6y
readinginthedark I‘ve never read her because my mother-in-law likes her. 😆 But maybe I should give her a try and just not tell my mil... 6y
TommieMarie74 @readinginthedark Don‘t let your MIL take Notaro away from you. It can be our secret... the MIL doesn‘t need to know!! Notaro‘s essays are so hilarious!!! 6y
Elsje LOL, I have a whole bookcase (actually, two!) with books to be read :-) 6y

Searching for tonight‘s read....for some reason, this is speaking to me....maybe it‘s because Laurie Notaro makes me laugh. Maybe it‘s because the title hits a bit close to home... 😏

I love Laurie Notaro's books. She always makes me laugh, always. Also, in her last few books there have been heartwarming & heartbreaking things as well. I highly recommend her writing. Her novels are great too!

This collection of essays was a bit uneven, it several made me laugh out loud, which is enough for it to earn a recommendation. Plus, she made me feel neat - a difficult feat. Her essays touch on Oregon hippies, spanx, and cheese making, among other topics. (Pic from my perpetually cluttered kitchen desk).

Laurie Notaro is my favorite author of all time and my spirit animal. I have every one of her books (these are the ones I have with me the others are at my mothers house). She was my first foray into humor books and she set the bar very high.

Books don't count as hoarding, right?

hwheaties Not even close. 8y
Simona @BethFishReads Maybe - personal touch for a comfortable living space? 🙄 8y
LitHousewife I'm with @missfarin. You have to have too much of something before you're a hoarder. I've yet to see too many of those in one place. 8y
Mamashep I hope not! 8y
DebinHawaii Totally exempt! 📚📚📚📚📚 8y
Lizpixie Definitely not. I saw this episode of some crappy reality show where this idiot presenter told this poor guy that his two shelves of books were hoarding and if he'd already read them why did he want them still. Idiot. 8y
