More Than Enough | Elaine Welteroth
23 posts | 22 read | 36 to read
A memoir from the revolutionary editor credited with bringing social consciousness to the pages of Teen Vogue and an inspiring exploration of what it means to be enough Throughout her life and a meteoric career in media that steadily defied expectation, Elaine Welteroth has grappled with restrictive labels--not black enough, not white enough, not old enough, not young enough, not 'fashion enough, ' not smart enough. But she's had enough of the world telling her--and all women--that they're not enough. In her motivational story, the groundbreaking journalist unpacks liberating lessons on race, identity, and success--from her own journey navigating the complexities of growing up mixed-race in America to transforming the Teen Vogue brand into a vehicle for social change and ultimately disrupting the media's narrative on beauty for young women across the world. As Welteroth learns to rely on herself by looking both inward and upward, we're ultimately reminded that we're not only just enough, but more than enough.

This book was such a timely suggestion by my colleague. I had very little knowledge about black history, though this isn't a black history book. This certainly gave an insight into how a black woman is seen in the US. Definitely made me think and I am willing to learn and educate myself.

With honest narratives of how she navigated love, race, politics and self-doubt on her climb to the top, there‘s a message. It‘s about sharing truth and stories, and the power of it to bring awakening to young women and women of any generations to our own truth and purpose. No one or nothing should limit our ability to dream. We Are Enough, for the world awaiting on us.
I guess, that‘s why some call this book a manifesto than a memoir.

An honest and revealing memoir -someone recently called it a manifesto -by the editor of Teen Vogue. Her professional journey as a young biracial woman is inspiring and her drive is impressive. Definitely a must read for women who might be swayed by those who would hold them back from following their own inner guidance. My only complaint is the title. I‘ll never remember it & I don‘t think it captures the essence of the book. But that‘s just me.

Both audiobooks from the library. I‘ve been blasting through More Than Enough so I can finish my library‘s paper copy of Maybe You Should Talk to Someone and then bam! Education of an Idealist drops into my loans. All 21 hours of it. Darn! Feeling a bit of pressure over here.

JamieArc Do you use the “suspend hold” function? I feel like I‘ve finally mastered it so I don‘t get more than one hold come in 😂😂 4y
Suet624 I just started using that option a month ago. Unfortunately I didn‘t suspend this one because it said it would be 20 weeks before it was available. Then they ordered another copy so the holds speeded up and I didn‘t have a chance to suspend it! Hope that makes sense. 4y

Thanks for putting this my way @Reggie - enjoyed the read and learning some more of the inequalities people have to put up with. Despite that she still comes over as very positive and inspirational. Still all need to fight the fight though and call out inequality and prejudice when it happens.

Reggie I was pumped this week because there was this lady who‘s a customer I really like. She was complaining that the #2 at our casino has not returned any of her 3 messages she left him. I was thinking in my mind it‘s cause he‘s a gutless wonder. For someone who plays 1000‘s of dollars a month you think that‘d be the least they could do. BUT then she said you know what it is, I‘ve heard stories and I know it‘s because he‘s Native and I‘m white and 👇🏼 4y
Reggie he‘s just prejudice. It‘s true what they say, we whites are becoming the minority in this country. At this point I just told myself to keep the mask of a smile I had on. My skin is brown and I had no idea how she could sit there with a straight face telling me that. It makes me want to wear a big tacky sombrero just to reiterate the fact I‘m not white and it‘s not ok to say stuff like that to me. Lol so this book was kind of a comfort this week. 4y
Reggie Glad you liked it TrishB. (edited) 4y

TrishB Oh Reggie, what a horrible woman. I don‘t know how you kept quiet (it‘s your job I know, you need it as we all do). Prejudice exists everywhere, everyday and it‘s never right ☹️ sending hugs 😘 @Reggie (edited) 4y
Centique @Reggie OMG Reggie, if I‘d been a customer standing behind her I would have had a few things to say! So hard when you can‘t though. 💕 4y
Reggie @Centique I know she‘s a nice person. She came in 2 days later to play, gave me a hug, but I can‘t think of her the same. 4y
Suet624 @Reggie it‘s amazing how ignorant people are. 4y

All the stars. If I had a daughter, I would read this with her. If I taught at an all girls school, this would be required reading. Elaine Welteroth writes about her journey from a young girl interviewing people in her bathtub to becoming the youngest and first black editor at Teen Vogue. She is biracial, a woman, all kinds of intersectionality going on. She has struggled in the in between. I also appreciated her showing some of the horrible 👇🏼

Reggie relationships she was in because she wasn‘t perfect, but she learned and moved on. Also, the world would be a different place if we all had her mother. Check this book out, please. So much to learn from in here. 4y
TrishB Well Reggie, I was sitting here pondering what to read next and your review popped up. So guess what I‘m reading next 😘 4y

Cathythoughts Sounds good ... would it work for #parentandchildmemoir (booked 2020) ?! 4y
Reggie @Cathythoughts I think so. The book is mostly about Elaine, but the mother is always there with love and support when needed. I would say yes. 4y
Cathythoughts Ok thanks !! Stacking 👍🏻❤️ 4y
squirrelbrain Sounds wonderful! ❤️ 4y
Reggie @squirrelbrain It was. There were moments when I was reading it where even I felt empowered. Just good stuff. 4y
Cathythoughts I think it will be fine too & the prompts are open to interpretation.... 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 4y
TrishB I think I will too 👍🏻 I will then pass onto my daughter to read ❤️ @Cathythoughts great suggestion, I haven‘t covered that one yet. 4y
Centique Well rightio then! I‘d better read this with The Teenager soon! 4y
Reggie @Centique I think there was a great message of female empowerment in here. She brought up a horrifying statistic that self esteem peaks at age 9 in girls. And if they are lucky, they learn to reclaim their self confidence later on. Hope you like it!! 4y

Suet624 I love Teen Vogue. I give it to friends as a gift sometimes. I like to support them because of their political positions on things. 4y
Rissreads I‘m hoping this one is on audible. Another fantastic review, I need to stop reading them because I add them all to my tbr stack! 😂 I wish I was a faster reader!!!!! 4y
Rissreads Yep, I just got it on audible! ❤️ 4y
Reggie @Suet624 I think you‘d like this. I think she was a huge part of them going in that direction. Also, I liked the behind the scenes things we see. How she had to advocate for herself and know when to stay or go. 4y
Reggie @Rissreads yayy, I loved this one and it was a comfort to read. I loved Elaine‘s mother. Hope you like it! 4y
Suet624 Just found it on Libby (my library app) and the audio version should be ready for me to read within two weeks!! 4y

This week I've been attending the State of Black Women summit at work and it's been great! Elaine Welteroth delivered the keynote and she was absolutely phenomenal. So fierce, so inspiring, and an all-around powerhouse. We all got a copy of her book (!!!) and after hearing her speak I truly can't wait to read it! 👏🏽 #blackgirlmagic

I finished this #librarybook over the weekend and I really enjoyed it!! The writing is great and the book is inspiring. I loved hearing stories from her time at Teen Vogue and her interactions with Anna Wintour (I find her fascinating!). She spent a lot of time describing her childhood and upbringing which was all very interesting as well. She‘s accomplished a lot in her life so far. If you enjoy a #memoir, I highly recommend this one! #nonfiction

Holy shit, go read this book. Welteroth is a formidable talent and her memoir is raw and honest, equal parts confession and advice. Totally inspiring and bad-ass. Ending the first day of the #24in48readathon at 6 hours and 20 minutes, not too shabby!

Welteroth is the former editor-in-chief of Teen Vogue. She was the youngest editor in the history of Condé Nast and the second African American to hold the position. She is now a judge on Bravo's competitive fashion show "Project Runway." Very conversational, like sitting and chatting with someone you know. Highly recommend.

A fabulous book that beautifully tells the story of a young woman‘s dreams and ambitions (professional and personal). It‘s a journey that challenges societal norms, addresses and confronts important issues about race, and along the way she shares her joy, pain, self doubt, and greatest triumphs. Of course the fact that a Rhetoric teacher helped her see the world and herself through a slightly different lens made me love her that much more.
