Andre the Giant
Andre the Giant: Life and Legend | Box Brown
14 posts | 18 read | 16 to read
Andre Roussimoff is known as both the lovable giant in The Princess Bride and a heroic pro-wrestling figure. He was a normal guy who'd been dealt an extraordinary hand in life. At his peak, he weighed 500 pounds and stood nearly seven and a half feet tall. But the huge stature that made his fame also signed his death warrant. Box Brown brings his great talents as a cartoonist and biographer to this phenomenal new graphic novel. Drawing from historical records about Andre's life as well as a wealth of anecdotes from his colleagues in the wrestling world, including Hulk Hogan, and his film co-stars (Billy Crystal, Robin Wright, Mandy Patinkin, etc), Brown has created in Andre the Giant, the first substantive biography of one of the twentieth century's most recognizable figures.

Great.

“I think of him as a master artist, and I think of him as a tragic figure who maybe didn‘t fit into this world. He had a very difficult life. But I think he and other wrestlers need to be appreciated as artists.”

A quick graphic novel that was easy enough to get into. A definite must for anyone that's into pro wrestling and likes graphic novels 👌👏

Side note: I am not into pro wrestling. I have no idea why I picked this up, but I did enjoy it non the less. 😆

readinginthedark Does it talk about the rest of his life outside of wrestling? I was thinking about picking this up because of some things Elwes said about him in As You Wish. 6y

Clwojick @readinginthedark a little bit. There was a bit about his daughter, and a lot about his alcoholism. And touched quickly on his childhood 6y

I loved wrestling as a kid. My dad even took me to see it once. No Andre there, but I loved him so much in the Princess Bride & everything I learned about his life seemed unreal. When this came out, I was excited to learn Box Brown would be doing an event here. I ended up unable to go & sad, but my comic shop saved me a signed copy, which has of course been buried in my TBR for years. 🙄 News of Netflix renewing Glow 🎉 has inspired me. 💪📚

Watching GLOW on Netflix made me nostalgic for the WWF of my childhood.

Box Brown obviously has a sympathetic POV about Andre. Still, he doesn't do too much turd polishing and trusts readers to make their own judgments about unflattering behavior. This is my second biography from First Second. I plan to look up more because they invite thought.

A cute and well done biography comic of Andre the Giant. We see his early life as a giant, his wrestling career, and beyond. Brown paints him as a tragic figure who made the best out of life. Really simple, but effective drawings throughout. I loved the interpretation of the other 70s/80s wrestlers too. It is a very quick read.

TheLondonBookworm 😢 I've heard so many beautiful stories about Andre the giant he seemed such a sweet soul, would be very interesting to read this. 8y

I've read for about 13 hours total so far for #24in48. I'll probably get a few more hours in before the end of the day. I finished Marie Antoinette, Serial Killer, The Gigantic Beard That Was Evil, The Divine, and Complicit. I also listened to about half of The Awakening of Sunshine Girl. I started Andre the Giant last night and plan to finish it today. I might also jump into Blood and Salt. It's great to knock some books off my TBR stack!

I wish there was more to the personal side of Andre's life in this biography. I don't get the appeal for wrestling but I've definitely learned a lot about 'the business' and Andre's work life. Interesting all around. #24in48

Riveted_Reader_Melissa That is a shame. What there was about his life in As You Wish was very interesting, to bad he's not around to write a memoir. 8y

Loved this graphic novel- I would recommend it to anyone from my Princess Bride-loving children's librarian to my WWE obsessed patrons. Gentle, funny, but unsentimental.
