Noughts & Crosses
Noughts & Crosses | Malorie Blackman
18 posts | 31 read | 14 to read
Two young people are forced to make a stand in this thought-provoking look at racism and prejudice in an alternate society. Sephy is a Cross -- a member of the dark-skinned ruling class. Callum is a Nought -- a " colourless" member of the underclass who were once slaves to the Crosses. The two have been friends since early childhood, but that's as far as it can go. In their world, Noughts and Crosses simply don't mix. Against a background of prejudice and distrust, intensely highlighted by violent terrorist activity, a romance builds between Sephy and Callum -- a romance that is to lead both of them into terrible danger. Can they possibly find a way to be together? In this gripping, stimulating and totally absorbing novel, black and white are right and wrong.

In my pursuit of diverse, contemporary Brit Lit texts I read the electronic play version of this story while waiting for my hard copy of the novel to arrive. I don‘t know if the play does the book justice, but I don‘t think my students have the patience for a 400 page book. I liked act 2 better than act 1, some R&J vibes plus surprising turns. I‘m downloading the graphic novel too because IMO visuals are significant for the story. #teachersoflitsy

Malorie Blackman's Noughts & Crosses; now a BBC series

This series talks about the issues of race and class in a world where two teenagers truly love each other beyond their society's determinatuon of who is worthy.

Well this was not at all what I expected. The beginning kind of annoyed me. I couldn‘t really get a handle on it. In some ways it was too close to reality and in some ways to different. I know it was described as dystopian but it didn‘t really strike as such in the beginning. Anyway, once the story got going it was great. I loved it and now I want to read the whole series. I ordered it, and now I must wait.

WomanistBibliophile It wasn‘t quite what I expected either! Nor were the sequels... 4y

I read this book when I was around 9. It was one of the first books that had a real lasting impact on me and the way I saw the world. After watching the recent BBC series (18 years later!) I've had an urge to revisit it.

What books had a lasting effect on you when you were younger?

Intended for teens, but easily one of the best books and series of books I‘ve ever read. Explores race dynamics in a parallel universe to ours - with elements of Romeo and Juliet. Will bring tears to your eyes.

This book. I have no words. All I Know is that I lived a life through the pages and it ended with me crying. Which by the way, if you know me, it is very hard to make me cry but somehow it was achieved by words on paper.
Seriously love this book. I would recommend to anyone who likes reading books from two points of views or anyone who fancies something different.
Praise to Malorie Blackman. I LOVE YOU.

I loved this book from start to finish. I normally like a happy ending to a book but I respect the author for not going with the traditional happy ever after ending. I thinks it's this conviction from the author which makes this book part of the 100 greatest reads and as acclaimed as it is.

#photobookchallenge day 2: dystopia!

I've wanted to read this for YEARS but it has really been bumped up the TBR because of how awesome Malorie Blackman is being about Trump and Brexit.

Just finished this and it's #inthemoodforlove for sure. This book....goodness, I have no idea what to say. It's heartbreaking and timely and relevant, yet also a deeply flawed story. I'm really, really torn about it. I'll make a list of what I think and continue in the comments.

First off, this is an impactful and powerful YA that should be talked about way more than it is. It has that golden potion that every YA novel aspires to have:

chlobee SERIOUS readability. Think Harry Potter, Hunger Games, Twilight: high octane emotions with a plot that never leaves you bored. Unless, of course, you are burdened by literary snobbery as I am. Overall this book is a pick for me because I know that it will stay with me for a long time. The story is moving, the characters' relationship is moving, and it tackles a BIG dystopia theme of reverse racism. 7y
chlobee I really commend Malorie Blackman for setting out to write such a book because she managed to take racism out of its historical context and show it in a familiar yet fresh way. YA romance could take some hints from this series in that respect. However. However. There exist some real storytelling flaws in the writing overall, which makes this book really hard to read if you are not 14. 7y
chlobee Reading this was like being trapped in a never ending middle school diary full of drama and wistful tones...don't say I didn't warn you. Also the herky-jerky-emotional-gut-punch plot employed here is disingenuous because the actual topic of racism is really really underwritten here. The racism is pretty basic, almost formulaic, and I was never taken aback by it. It was straight out of a history book, which seems such a waste. 7y
chlobee Regardless, this is still a pick for me, and if you have any inclination toward YA racist dystopias, give this a go. It will leave you heartbroken and deeply sad (seriously, so so sad), but these stories are important in this day and age. 7y

400+ pages in one day alone. Yup, it is that good! The story is about two young people with different races, trying to break the norm of inability of Nought and Cross to mix well.

Book ends with a heart-breaking moment, but still you can't simply to not know what's in store in next series.

Read all the series, because bruh they are one hella great series!
