God, the miscommunication between Quin and Ruth always kills me. They could have been so happy so much earlier in the text! Ibbotson's narration is always a joy, though. #historicalromance #historicalfiction

I love Ibbotson's romances so damned much. This one, set right before WWII, is probably the darkest of the lot, but there's still plenty of enchantment alongside the horror. Both the refugees and the students foster strong communities, and the romance itself unfolds very much between the lines. We see the heroine & hero are perfect for each other because of who they are by themselves, not just because of their mutual attraction. It's glorious.
I need to be upright for a little while (it's a pain day), so I've installed myself at the dining room table with my book, three shortbread fingers, two chocolates, and a cup of sweet almond green tea.
I have to put this book face down whenever I take a break because the cover model's eyes follow you wherever you go and that always creeps me out. It's easier to ignore the four thumbnail-sized models who stare at me from the back cover.
Ibbotson's romances are the sort of thing I rec to people who think they dislike romance, but she DOES have a bit of a formula that includes a tedious (though not usually outright vile) fiancée. This time around, the attachment is on the woman's side.
I'm right on the edge of a pain day, so I'm using Eva Ibbotson as distraction-based pain relief.
The book's excellent so far, and I keep thinking how personal it must've been for Ibbotson. It's about a non-observant Jewish family who flees Austria when the Nazis take over; Ibbotson's own story, though I think I've read she was only two or three when her parents left, not 20 like the central character.
Foil accents are my favorite. As is anything this woman writes. However had I missed it until now?
