More Tales of the City TV Tie in | Armistead Maupin
"An extended love letter to a magical San Francisco."-- "New York Times Book Review" The internationally beloved classic comes to life in a Showtime miniseries. Few works of fiction have blazed a trail through popular culture like Armistead Maupin's "Tales of the City" series. Since its publication as a daily newspaper serial in 1976, Maupin's incisive comedy of manners has expanded into six bestselling novels, the first of which became a highly acclaimed television miniseries starring Oscar-winner Olympia Dukakis as the irrepressible Anna Madgrigal, doyenne of 28 Barbary Lane. Now "More Tales of the City" is becoming a Showtime miniseries, once again starring Olympia Dukakis, Laura Linney, and Thomas Gibson, as well as exciting new cast members, including Swoosie Kurtz and Ed Asner. It will be broadcast in June 1998. The tenants of 28 Barbary Lane have fled their cozy nest for adventures for afield. Mary Ann Singleton finds love at sea with a forgetful stranger, Mona Ramsey discovers her doppleganger in a desert whore-house, and Michael Tolliver bumps into a certain gynecologist in a seedy Mexican Bar. Meanwhile, their venerable landlady takes the biggest journey of all'without ever leaving home.

1-12-21: My 4th finished book of 2021! Book 2 in the series finds the inhabitants of 29 Barbary Lane finding love, solving mysteries and traveling to far off places. San Fran in the late 70s was a fun place to be! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #moretalesofthecity #armisteadmaupin 👍🏼📖#️⃣4️⃣

When i rd bk 1 6 yrs ago i anticipated rdg this joyous bk a lot sooner + i put it down with a smile on my face after revisiting Michael, mary ann, and mrs madrigal in 1970's san Francisco. The story reveals much abt mrs madrigal as Michael, mary ann, mona, and Brian the residents of the house find love as well as mysterious goings on. I have the next in the series on a tbr shelf so hopefully i will rd it a lot sooner. A perfect feel good book.

Blueberry I'm through the 4th I think. 4y
CarolynM They're such fabulous characters and they've stayed with me. I read the first 6 in the early 90's and then Michael Tolliver Lives when it came out in 2007 - they were all still fresh in my mind, no recaps needed🙂 4y

Visiting with some old friends. After college, when I was about to move abroad, I sold my complete set (up to then) of TOTC books. I‘m not usually sentimental about books but I still regret selling them from time to time. MTOTC and Babycakes are two of my favorites. Going to reread them all before finishing out the series with the two new ones.

Another visit with our friends from Barbary Lane means more soap opera-like twists and turns, and I think it's even more fun than the first one. Though our corn-pone Midwestern gal (who is a little too corn-pone and Midwestern to be from Cleveland, even in the '70s) Mary Ann gets a little annoying in this one, I feel even more in love with most of the returning characters. Also, can I please move back to northern California now?

3. Lately I've been going through my Goodreads lists and seeing what's available at the digital library. Some I have to place a hold on them. Then it becomes a matter of which one becomes available next.

SilversReviews I didn't know Goodreads had a digital library. Thanks for playing and for the info. 😊 6y
QueenJen @SilversReviews Oh no! Goodreads doesn't have a digital library. I compare my tbr list on Goodreads to what's available at my local library's digital books. So sorry for the confusing wording. 6y

This book is the second in the series. I ❤️it. I now know Mrs. Madrigal's secret and it's exactly what I wanted it to be. I have enjoyed Maupin's witty humor and will start the third book next week. Can't wait to see what else this cast of characters will get into next. 📚

Grise I love all of the books, read them so many times. They occupy a special place in my heart 💗 7y

Listening to this #audiobook while exploring our new #SanFrancisco neighborhood was such a treat. Even better than the first Tales. I immediately downloaded the next one from Overdrive. I‘m hooked!

Blaire These are high on my tbr for next year. I may have mentioned before but I remember so clearly my mom reading these when I was a kid. 7y
KVanRead @blaire I watched the series in the 90‘s and the books have been TBR forever but kind of glad because this is the perfect time for me to read them Serendipity.😊 7y

Another enjoyable installation of these quirky characters! Cynthia Nixon did a great job narrating the audiobook. I loved the sorid soap opera quality of these character's lives combined with fun storytelling and queer and trans characters. Fluffy fun! #queerbooks #transbooks

Silly but fun, and a great way to travel back in time to groovy late-70s San Francisco. I enjoyed all the plot twists and the ways story threads connected. What keeps me interested is the characters, and I can't help but picture them in my mind's eye as the actors portraying them in the PBS miniseries. Not sure if I'll continue to the third installment or if I've had my fill of 28 Barbary Lane. Glad I read this one though.

Jinjer I'm not sure which of these I read long ago but I know I enjoyed them. Will stack for a possible reread. 7y

Hello from sunny San Miguel de Allende where Mexican Independence Day preparations are in full swing (aka El Grito). In the interest of full disclosure, I took most of this month's challenge photos at home in CA so I could play along from afar. Here is my offering for #uglycover #somethingforsept #septphotochallenge.

BarbaraTheBibliophage I had another edition of this book that was equally ugly. Think it went to the library for their book sale! 8y
LeahBergen It's the colour scheme that is really ugly, isn't it?? 8y
ApoptyGina69 @LeahBergen Definitely the muted '80s colors and the weird palm tree island. I have book 1 from the same publisher and at least it has the Barbary Lane sign, but still the color scheme. Great series though! 8y
