Hornet Flight | Ken Follett
14 posts | 21 read | 10 to read
Ken Follett follows his bestsellers Jackdaws and Code to Zero with an extraordinary novel of early days of World War II... It is June 1941 and the war is not going well for England. Across the North Sea, eighteen-year-old Harald Olufsen takes a shortcut on the German-occupied Danish island of Sande an discovers an astonishing sight that will change the momentum of the war. He must get word to England-except that he has no way to get there. He has only an old derelict Hornet Moth biplane rusting away in a ruined church: a plane so decrepit that it is unlikely ever to get off the ground...even if Harald knew how to fly it.

This was a very enjoyable book set in Denmark during the German occupation in the Second World War. Ordinary Danish people putting their lives at risk to try and help defeat the German war machine and help protect the lives of British Forces taking on bombing missions in Germany. Good links also developed to the Russian front and the forming of a British - Russian Alliance. Great characterisation and story telling. Ken Follett at his best! 😍

megnews A period I had avoided previously, out of the blue, I‘ve been on a World War II binge lately. Stacked. 6y

An account of Nazi occupation of Denmark 1941 and group of resistance known as Nightwatchmen. UK wondering why their bombers are being shot down. German radar station located on Denmark's island of Sande. Harald Olufsen's mission to take pictures and get them to UK before the largest aerial assault begins. characters are well-drawn, the plot has twists. this page-turner becomes unputdownable suspense. I recommend this book to those who love WWII.

Andrew65 You got through the second half of the book quickly! 6y

Starting to Read Hornet Flight by Ken Follett, which is a World War 2 Suspense Thriller. I am reading this with @Tove_Reads and @EadieB . Happy to have others joining us.

Andrew65 Weird coincidence. We have Freya in this book just as Storm Freya is heading across the U.K. today. @EadieB @Tove_Reads 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 that‘s a strange coincidence. We will get 6 to 8 inches today where I live. Winter storm Scott. (edited) 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB That‘s a lot. Still sunny and warm here (for time of year), wind picking up a bit. 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 I saw that your winds will be up to 80/mph today! Mainly in the southern coastal areas. About 60/mph where you live. (edited) 6y

Tove_Reads @andrew65 @eadieb How are you liking it? 6y
EadieB @Tove_Reads I‘m starting the 3rd section. It‘s interesting. I like his writing style. How about you? @Andrew65 (edited) 6y
Tove_Reads @EadieB He‘s a great writer! I am just so fed up about WW2, that the subject doesn‘t excite me at all. 6y
EadieB @Tove_Reads I know it is a subject well used. I like reading about Denmark though. Different area of the war. @andrew65 I think I like Whiteout better but too early to be sure. (edited) 6y
Tove_Reads @EadieB Being Nordic I‘m very familiar with what happened over here as well. Hopefully he has some twists and turns coming up! 6y
EadieB @Tove_Reads I think a lot of his books may be about the war. Not sure but I will have to check them out. @Andrew65 6y
EadieB @Tove_reads @andrew65 His code name was “The Needle.” He was a German aristocrat of extraordinary intelligence—a master spy with a legacy of violence in his blood, and the object of the most desperate manhunt in history. . . .

But his fate lay in the hands of a young and vulnerable English woman, whose loyalty, if swayed, would assure his freedom—and win the war for the Nazis. . . .

EadieB @Tove_Reads @Andrew65 From the teeming streets of London to the infernal hold of a slave ship to a sprawling Virginia plantation, Ken Follett‘s turbulent, unforgettable novel of liberty and revolution brings together a vivid cast of heroes and villains, lovers and rebels, hypocrites and hell-raisers—all propelled by destiny toward an epic struggle that will change their lives forever.

Tove_Reads @EadieB That one is highly praised, so it should be a good one! 6y
Andrew65 I was very tired yesterday so behind, as well as visiting my mother in law and grand daughter. Currently on Chapter 2. 😳 I don‘t mind the war but not my favourite theme but can live with it if it is a great story like (edited) 6y
EadieB @Tove_Reads @Andrew65 In 1866, tragedy strikes the exclusive Windfield School when a young student drowns in a mysterious accident. His death and its aftermath initiate a spiraling circle of treachery that will span three decades and entwine many lives. 6y
EadieB @Tove_Reads @Andrew65 this is another wwII book 6y
Tove_Reads @EadieB @andrew65 I most definitely want to read all of his books! Whiteout was somehow so fresh and different, something I didn‘t expect. But he has written so many books that he must have covered many themes! 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 How is Chloe doing? Hope I spelled her name right! (edited) 6y
Tove_Reads @EadieB @andrew65 I think we have Jackdaws coming up next. 6y
EadieB @Tove_Reads @andrew65 Should we choose another one in between the two WWII books? 6y
Tove_Reads @EadieB @andrew65 If I remember correctly, Code to Zero is the second in line. 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB well done on remembering the name 👍 the spelling is Chloe, I always find it a strange spelling - not the way it sounds! She is doing really well. Initially an issue because found to be tongue tied and was stopping her able to breast feed. Tongue was cut and now doing much better. Growing quickly and developing her characteristics. 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB Ye# I think we should intersperse the WWII books @EadieB @Tove_Reads 6y
EadieB @Tove_Reads @Andrew65 This one looks good about The Cold War and the US and Russia space race 1958. 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 Nice! So fun to watch them grow! Glad to hear her problem was resolved! (edited) 6y
Tove_Reads @EadieB @andrew65 I own Code to Zero, so it works for me! 6y
EadieB @Tove_Reads Great news! 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB @Tove_Reads Our library has a copy of 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 @Tove_Reads My library has both audio and book! I‘m in heaven with those! 6y

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Follett did it again for me. His historical fictions always grip me. Moving along at an exhilarating pace, the story of a group of anti-nazi resistance fighters during WWII is both satisfying and frustrating. I love the juxtaposition between the good and evil within a certain villain, and I like how the good guys don't always win. Same type of romances as his other novels, I might have that bit of criticism, but overall, I loved it.

2 chapters in and already immensely enjoying #KenFollett's novel, Hornet Flight. I got hooked on him with the #CenturyTrilogy; he has such an engrossing way if writing, especially his characters.

Merethebookgal I've only read The Pillars of the Earth, but I really enjoyed that! I'm looking forward to reading more by him. 8y
UltraVioletRosie @Merethebookgal I've got that one on my TBR shelf and I am excited for it! I've heard good things. Seriously, read the Century Trilogy, though! You'll be asking yourself WHY it's not a TV series yet!! 8y

I love a good story with some history thrown in and whole lot tension! This is a story of courage and guts in the face of incredible odds when Britain was standing alone against Hitler who was over running the world country by country. Two young Danes save the day!
