People Who Knew Me
People Who Knew Me: A Novel | Kim Hooper
17 posts | 14 read | 30 to read
Emily Morris got her happily-ever-after earlier than most. Married at a young age to a man she loves passionately, she is building the life she always wanted. But when her mother-in-law becomes chronically ill, enormous stress threatens her marriage. Emily watches helplessly as the devotion Drew once showed her is transferred to his ailing mother. When she's thrust into an enforced caretaker role, it's too much to bear. Emily starts spending more and more time at work. That's when she falls in love with her boss. That's when she gets pregnant. Resolved to tell her husband of the affair and to leave him for the father of her child, Emily's plans are thwarted when the world is suddenly split open. It's 9/11 and her lover is just one of the thousands of people who have been killed in the towers. It's amid terrible tragedy that she finds her freedom, as she leaves New York City to start a new life. It's not easy, but Emily--nowConnie--forges a new happily-ever-after in California. But when a life-threatening diagnosis upends Connie's life, she is forced to confront her past for the good of her thirteen-year-old daughter. A riveting debut in which a woman must confront her own past in order to secure the future of her daughter,People Who Knew Measks readers-what would you do?

#BookReport 23/24

My favorite this week was the tagged one. Kim Hooper is a great author (thanks for introducing me @Megabooks !) and I already found another one by her, about Japan!
I also made a start with the detective Kim Scott series, which is promising.
The Spinoza problem is a fascinating read about philosophy and anti semitism. Only the Danticat didn‘t meet my expectations, otherwise a great week.

TrishB A good week 👍🏻 5mo
Megabooks So glad you love Hooper, too! 5mo

You were right Meg, this is a great read and Kim Hooper a new favorite author. Thank you for sending me this book Jo!

Just after 9/11 Emily leaves NYC and starts over again in California where she raises her baby. Thirteen years later the past catches up when Emily is diagnosed with breast cancer. A very sad and utterly human read of not very perfect people - which I loved!

squirrelbrain Sounds great! 5mo

Why isn‘t everyone talking about Kim Hooper? She is fantastic! This is a second 5⭐️ book from her! She wrote a morally fraught woman with cancer, who is hiding things from her daughter. I liked that Emily wasn‘t a saint. I liked that there were no easy answers here.

Two timelines: 1. Emily is raising her daughter in LA and has just been diagnosed with aggressive breast cancer. 2. Emily is in a failing marriage and deserts her husband, who is ⬇️

Megabooks caring for his mother with Parkinson‘s, in the wake of 9/11 while pregnant. She begins living under an assumed name in LA. BTW her whole catalog is on hoopla ebook and audio! (edited) 13mo
Cinfhen You really have discovered a new favorite author!!! 13mo

RebelReader No Hiding in Boise is excellent too! 13mo
Megabooks @RebelReader agree!! I read it earlier this month! 😁 I only have 2 more (on hoopla at least) that I haven‘t read. 😢 13mo
BookNAround No Hiding in Boise was on the Great Group Reads list the year it came out. That was my introduction to her and I agree she‘s really good. 13mo
Megabooks @BookNAround I must‘ve missed that. I just happened to pull her short stories off the shelf at Parnassus. So glad her books are on hoopla, but it‘s been hard not to binge more than I am! 13mo
BarbaraBB I have just started Acorns and am already checking out her backlist. What a great writer! 12mo
Megabooks @BarbaraBB right?!? How did I not hear about her until now?? 12mo

I've heard almost no buzz about this, but I really enjoyed it! I love books that tell a before and after story, hinging on one central event. Emily/Connie made decisions that I wouldn't personally, but I totally understood her motivations and loved that the author presented a scenario where everyone and no one is the bad guy. Totally fascinating.

Notafraidofwords That ending killed me. 8y

This is a hard book to rate especially because the concept feels original. A woman who marries young and after an intense affair, fakes her death after 9/11. All in all, this book is great and consuming. I have issues with her secondary characters that felt like stereotypes. And that ending! This is still worth reading. It really demonstrates how effin difficult life is and how maybe (just maybe) you would disappear too if you had the chance.

Notafraidofwords Would love to discuss the book, anyone read it? 8y
dylanisreading Sounds really compelling. Adding it to my TBR! 8y
Notafraidofwords @Bianca it really is, the protagonist makes horrible choices. Yet, you root for her all the time. 8y
Notafraidofwords @Jenshootsweddings yes totally worth reading! 8y

I'm not that far into this book yet, around ch.2. But oh boy do I love a book about a woman running away and creating a whole new life. I'm not sure what it is about that storyline that attracts me. The idea of someone continuing to live, but disappearing to others. I guess that's harder to do with social media and what not, but I find it fascinating.

Notafraidofwords A book that I liked similar to this idea is: 8y
Blair_Reads Ah man. Adding this to my pile!! 8y

Wow! This is a brave debut novel centered around a woman who makes some terrible choices before and after 9/11. It's a marvelous feat that I continued to like her and root for her. A lot of promise in his author.

This is a wonderful debut from a new author, highly recommend. A lot of people rated it low due to an unsympathetic main character, but I found her and her situation very human and the story compelling despite making choices I wouldn't. It's meant to make you think and it does. Add it to your list!

Alena I agree that Hooper keeps her sympathetic despite her bad choices. A really compelling read. 8y

I was enthralled at the end of this book. I couldn't turn the pages fast enough. I'm pleading with Kim Hooper to write a sequel.
