One Midlife Crisis and a Speedo
One Midlife Crisis and a Speedo | Darrel Bristow-Bovey
1 post | 1 to read
If you dont choose your midlife crisis, your crisis will choose you. Darrel Bristow-Bovey has tried his best to deny to himself that hes getting older, but you cant hide from the truth in the changing-room mirror. One day, surrounded by sharks on a small boat in the Indian Ocean, he suddenly realises his midlife crisis is already under way. Running a gauntlet of bucket lists, prostate examinations and sexual misadventures, Darrel sets himself a task: to follow in the footsteps of Lord Byron and the Greek hero Hercules and swim across the Dardanelles in Turkey. The only problem is that hes old and tried and lazy and cant swim very well. One Midlife Crisis and a Speedo is a warm, witty, eventually wise journey into the terrors and absurdities and grumpy compensations of middle age that will speak to every man and woman who has ever noticed that time is ticking by faster every day.

Minor-mini-mid-midlife crisis going on! I am going on my first ever vacation without children (yea guys, besides our honeymoon it's been 11 years since my last kid free vacation) and I don't know what to bring to read! The top photo is of books I would like to take, the bottom photo is of books I have on my kindle. Welcome to my #tbrshelf

julesG Agree with @ForeverNerdy and @TrishB, take your kindle and buy some more whilst on vacation. Enjoy! 7y
Sophoclessweetheart Neverwhere, The Miniaturist and Wolf Hall are really good reads. How long are you away for? That seems like an AWFUL lot of books for one holiday ✨😂🙈🙈 7y
LauraBeth I agree with the others - take the kindle and then buy more on vacation! 😀 7y
Birdsong28 Recommend The Miniaturist. 📖📚 7y
dylanisreading In the Woods is so good. 7y
scripturient I know how you feel. I was on my first kid-free mini vacation two weeks ago. It was weird but also felt really good. ☺️ 7y
SomedayAlmost Wolf Hall is good but not a vacation read. Dense, intense, and has many historical characters to follow. 7y
Mommamanzi @ForeverNerdy @TrishB @julesG @LauraBeth the kindle is def going. Thank you! I do however have an irrational fear of it dying and me being stranded without a book so at least one "real" book has to go lol. 7y
Mommamanzi @Noonlightreader and @scripturient my husband and I are leaving early Sunday morning to go to Maine and will be back Thursday. My parents will be with the babies and I KNOW they will be safe Buuuuuuut..... I don't want to go!! I need it for sure though. 7y
Sophoclessweetheart I can imagine. My little girl is like my shadow, if I'm without her for even an hour I feel like I've lost a limb x 7y
