Monstress Volume 1: Awakening
Monstress Volume 1: Awakening | Marjorie M Liu
Set in an alternate matriarchal 1900's Asia, in a richly imagined world of art deco-inflected steam punk, MONSTRESS tells the story of a teenage girl who is struggling to survive the trauma of war, and who shares a mysterious psychic link with a monster of tremendous power, a connection that will transform them both and make them the target of both human and otherworldly powers. About the Creators: New York Times bestselling and award-winning writer Marjorie Liu is best known for her fiction and comic books. She teaches comic book writing at MIT, and leads a class on Popular Fiction at the Voices of Our Nation (VONA) workshop. Ms. Liu's extensive work includes the bestselling "Astonishing X-Men" for Marvel Comics, which featured the gay wedding of X-Man Northstar and was subsequently nominated for a GLAAD Media Award for outstanding media images of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. Prior to writing full-time, Liu was a lawyer. She currently resides in Boston. Sana Takeda is an illustrator and comic book artist who was born in Niigata, and now resides in Tokyo, Japan. At age 20 she started out as a 3D CGI designer for SEGA, a Japanese video game company, and became a freelance artist when she was 25. She is still an artist, and has worked on titles such as "X-23" and "Ms. Marvel" for Marvel Comics, and is an illustrator for trading card games in Japan.

This book is FABULOUS, so well written & beautifully illustrated.
Maika has something dangerous in her & must return to the horrendous pit of suffering run by evil nuns. She finds more than she thought, and runs into a political situation that might turn into a war. One of the kids she rescued won‘t leave her, and their cat companion helps him stay safe as Maika tries to figure out her past and the monster inside of her.
4.5/5 wonderful!

Finishing up the last of my October reviews today. #Screamathon @4thhouseontheleft

This is a stunning graphic novel, both in artwork and writing. Intricate world building coupled with immersive dialogue makes it a beauty to read. It's perfect for fantasy fans who like a bit of the macabre mixed in.

I really enjoyed Monstress - Volume One, the artwork is stunning, it's also very rich in dialogue, it has an engaging plot which I'm looking forward to continuing and finding out more about Maika Halfwolf; she's a interesting character and there's lots of potential here. 💫

Enjoyed this one - the world, the artwork, the story. Beautifully done. The pictured panels just made me laugh and was definitely one of the lighter scenes in the series.

I loved the first volume of this graphic novel, where a girl/monster is out for revenge on those who have enslaved and tortured her people. The universe-building here was impressive and I loved the artwork.

That was a lot to pack into one volume. I adore the art in this and you get thrown into the thick of things right away. I still have questions, but the story itself is so captivating that instead of it feeling unfinished it just makes me want to know what happens next that much more. It feels like I'm reading a very dark, mythical, steampunk origin story of a legend in mythology. Can't wait to see where this goes. Read for OWLs #magicalreadathon

This volume starts with Maika, Kipp and Ren arriving in Thyria, a seaport town, attempting to find answers about Maika's mother, and the Ancient God that rests within Maika. The trio travel to the Island of Bones, and encounter an old future-telling fox imprisoned. He reveals to Maika the truth of her mother and her interest in the gods, and Maika is the Shaman-Empress reincarnated set to harvest chaos in their world.

This volume had me on edge!

This part is a surprising turn! The old god inside of Maika is remembering something from his past, and Maika's subconcious, which is a child version of herself, is guiding the god through his memories. I love this! Majorie Lu is making the god a front character that is complex Maika; he depends on Maika not only as a host, but as something else. #fantasylover

Kipp is a true sweet-heart, and she is so loyal to Maika and Master Ren. And she pushes herself beyond her limits to be supportive and helpful within this trio. Crossing my fingers tuat as I continue the series nothing happens to Kipp (the ending of Volume 9 of Saga still haunts me; I hope Marjorie Lui doesn't do THAT with Kipp)
