Beasts of Burden: Animal Rites
Beasts of Burden: Animal Rites | Evan Dorkin
14 posts | 17 read | 11 to read
Welcome to Burden Hill -- a picturesque little town adorned with white picket fences and green, green grass, home to a unique team of paranormal investigators. Beneath this shiny exterior, Burden Hill harbors dark and sinister secrets, and it's up to a heroic gang of dogs -- and one cat -- to protect the town from the evil forces at work. These are the Beasts of Burden Hill -- Pugs, Ace, Jack, Whitey, Red and the Orphan -- whose early experiences with the paranormal (including a haunted doghouse, a witches' coven, and a pack of canine zombies) have led them to become members of the Wise Dog Society, official animal agents sworn to protect their town from evil. This turns out to be no easy task, as they soon encounter demonic cannibal frogs, tortured spirits, a secret rat society, and a bizarre and deadly resurrection in the Burden Hill cemetery -- events which lead to fear and heartbreak as our four-legged heroes discover that the evil within Burden Hill is growing and on the move. Can our heroes overcome these supernatural menaces? Can evil be bested by a paranormal team that doesn't have hands? And even more importantly, will Pugs ever shut the hell up? Adventure, mystery, horror, and humor thrive on every page of "Beasts of Burden" -- a comic-book series that will capture readers' hearts and haunt their dreams. Award-winning comics creators Evan Dorkin ("Milk and Cheese") and Jill Thompson ("Scary Godmother") first introduced these very special investigators in"The Dark Horse Book of Hauntings"and the other"Dark Horse Book of" . . .anthologies, for which they won coveted Eisner Awards for Best Short Story and Best Painter. Those first tales are collected here, along with the comic series"Beasts of Burden"issues #1 #4."

Really enjoyed this. It was a nice switch of pace for me, I‘ve been reading a lot of lighthearted stuff and needed a little spook. This was also part of my tbr for this month. #wintergames #teamreadnosedreindeer @StayCurious

1. Yes- I personally think it‘s a matter of length. When I think comics I think of a floppy staple-bound single issue. Graphic novels are, well, novel / novella length, and bound like regular books. Comics printed into volumes counts as graphic novels for me also

2. Tagged!

3. I love me a funky style 👍

BookmarkTavern That watercolor artwork for 2 looks gorgeous! Thanks for posting! 4y

The dogs of Burden Hill face ghosts, golems, a werewolf and a plague of frogs, among other creepy paranormal stuff in this amusing comics collection. The episodes begin with a haunted doghouse. I love many things about this, like the watercolour art by Jill Thompson, and the pug who scoffs at anything supernatural, and that the wise dog looks like an old wizard. Warning: dead animals, rat hordes and evil human witches. #graphicnovel

This graphic novel features a team of dogs and one cat, named Orphan 😿, who fight supernatural occurances in their town.

These stories tugged at the heart strings. Highly recommended BUT animals do get hurt and die in this series so forewarned...

It's like a mix of Mouseguard and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa.

This is a fantastic graphic novel. Think of it as urban fantasy, but the heroes are a pack of dogs (and one cat) who protect their humans against supernatural threats. One scene seriously made me cry. Highly recommended to dog lovers. #graphicnovels #urbanfantasy

sloanghost Is this the one with that super freaky sheep comic!! 7y

I find myself constantly amazed that reading material like this is appropriate for my Master's Thesis. Beasts of Burden manages to be both hilarious and heartbreaking at the same time.

A crew of dogs, and one cat! go up against the paranormal. Kinda loved it that the neighborhood pets were taking care of business. 🐶🐱👍 #biblioweekend

Zelma Have you read Sidekicks by Dan Santant? It's a middle grade graphic novel about a superhero's pets and their adventures. I thought it was a lot of fun. 8y

Bette @Zelma no, I haven't read that one. But I'm making a note of it. Thanks! 😀 8y
