The End of All Things | John Scalzi
14 posts | 25 read | 10 to read
Hugo-award winning author, John Scalzi returns to his best-selling Old Man's War universe with The End of All Things, the direct sequel to 2013's The Human DivisionHumans expanded into space...only to find a universe populated with multiple alien species bent on their destruction. Thus was the Colonial Union formed, to help protect us from a hostile universe. The Colonial Union used the Earth and its excess population for colonists and soldiers. It was a good arrangement...for the Colonial Union. Then the Earth said: no more. Now the Colonial Union is living on borrowed time-a couple of decades at most, before the ranks of the Colonial Defense Forces are depleted and the struggling human colonies are vulnerable to the alien species who have been waiting for the first sign of weakness, to drive humanity to ruin. And there's another problem: A group, lurking in the darkness of space, playing human and alien against each other-and against their own kind -for their own unknown reasons. In this collapsing universe, CDF Lieutenant Harry Wilson and the Colonial Union diplomats he works with race against the clock to discover who is behind attacks on the Union and on alien races, to seek peace with a suspicious, angry Earth, and keep humanity's union intact...or else risk oblivion, and extinction-and the end of all things.

Let the quarterly stats review begin! According to Storygraph, Science Fiction and Mystery are tied for my top genres (if I don't include the vagueness of 'graphic novels' in the actual top spot🙄). The Mimicking of Known Successes is both sci fi and mystery so it gets the bridging position in this list of Jan-Mar 2024 faves.

Robotswithpersonality Having had way more successes with my sci-fi selections than my meh mysteries, not just these past few months, but last year, I am finally working through the last of my library holds' backlist of mysteries to change up the proportion of my reads from more mystery to more sci-fi. I am still continuing on in like 8 mystery series though, so, assuming regular backlist catch up or new publication release, expect at least that many per month. 💁🏼‍♂️ 3w

Oh, but I could happily read so many more entries in this series, despite loving how Scalzi chose to end things.
Fully immersed, every time I'm back in the world of this series, the rotating and new bunch of characters, banter and debate, he just does interpersonal dialogue so well. 1/2

Robotswithpersonality 2/2 I mean yeah, there's some epic, and tragic interplanetary, interspecies stuff going on, amid action scenes and humourous asides, but it's how the author chooses to take the time to have various beings speak to each other that gets me every time.
And as always major props for the blantant anti-colonial rhetoric.

I love that Scalzi's far flung sci fi future includes the idea that a whisper of The Matrix remains in our terminology/popular lexicon.

The great Canadian book haul.

LauraBrook I think you showed restraint! 7y
shanaqui @LauraBrook My wife says, "I sincerely hope that's sarcasm." 7y
LauraBrook I was totally serious - that's how my restrained book buying looks. And also why my house is filled with piles of books. @shanaqui 7y

shanaqui @LauraBrook Honestly, I was being somewhat restrained too... Partly by finances! 7y
rabbitprincess Excellent haul! I am glad that the Canadian bookshops were filled with treats for you 😊🇨🇦 7y
shanaqui @rabbitprincess Thanks! Yeah, I saved up for this, knowing they have some excellent second hand stores -- and even Chapters had some great bargains like hardbacks for $7 CAD. My mother-in-law would be justified in wondering if her birthday was just an excuse to visit again... 😆 7y

Wrap up for #24in48
1. I finished one book; started another, and listened to one audiobook.
2. Almost 5 hours
3. Loved the Blog posts and all the Litsy posts
4. Not sure how the prizing worked. I won on hour six but am blot sure what I actually won. I also had trouble posting pics on the blog site.
5. Yes! The next one is the weekend before my birthday. Now I have plans.
Thanks @24in48 , this was a lot of fun!

My fiancé got me this book today. The title I find kinda funny because this weekend @GoodallBookHaul and I are getting married in our home in our library. The end one thing and the start of a new life and adventure with her. I know there will be lots of books and love all the way through it. ❤?❤??
