so-soThis book came out in the early nineties and it has not aged well. Man crazy women, smoking, homophobia, fat shaming, and so on. It did have some funny bits, so it gets a so-so for that. I'm sure at the time it was fresh and honest. But now it just seems so dated IMO. I kept waiting for some big female empowering moment, but it never really came.
I finally feel like I can let go of the breath I've been holding for...years. I hope you all have the same sense of peace in your soul today. 💙💙

Not only is this story my favorite, but the movie version is definitely my favorite as well. This story even gave me inspiration to future writing masterpieces, yet there will only be one woman that the story will follow. Terry McMillan is truly an amazing author. Her female protagonists are just like women in real life. I could relate to Bernadine even at the age of seventeen. This wonderful book made it to my Recommended Reading List.
