Blackout poetry has a goal of using pre-existing or “found“ text to create something new. Portions of the original text are kept, while other parts are drawn over or crossed out. Well-crafted blackout poetry can give new meanings to old texts.

Here's a blackout poem I created from one page from A TREE GROWS IN BROOKLYN. 💚🌳💚

dabbe @lil1inblue It was one of the best activities I ever did with my students. Such an excellent way to teach word choice. 😘 2mo

TheSpineView Have always loved this poem!❤️❤️❤️ 2mo
dabbe His drawing, too? 🤩🤩🤩 2mo
IndoorDame @dabbe yes! Though, I grabbed it off the internet not out of my copy of his book this morning and I also saw a version done in dark blues that looked more his style… posted this cause it was easier to read, but I‘m not sure if he drew both or if this has the colors digitally manipulated 🤔 2mo
dabbe @IndoorDame Either way it's GORGEOUS! 😍 2mo
IndoorDame @dabbe AGREED!!! I first fell in love with his poetry because of the art in the books! 2mo

The Giving Tree | Shel Silverstein

Fellow Litsyans, I can‘t help but notice a large drop in this sites use. Am I the only one? While I am not the most active person on here, it is the only place I write my short reviews. And I used to come here for recs and book community, but have found myself back to Goodreads mostly. Is it due to the surge of booktok? I can‘t help but feel a little down about it, bc Litsy is a wonderful little site! #saturdaythoughts

Crazeedi I've never even heard of booktok! So I'm not sure. I wasn't on most of last year, but been posting regularly since Jan. Anyone else know?? Maybe tag some people and see 2mo
Chrissyreadit I think litsy always has ebbs and flows. there are still active buddy reads and some other activities. I do think it leans more interactive and personal but i‘m not active on booktok. it has a simpler presentation so maybe not everyone‘s cup of tea. 2mo
LazyLibrary @Crazeedi I‘m not on “The Tok” 😅 I think it‘s just a # used for book peeps like us, but I‘ve noticed a lot of reviewers and recs coming from it! 2mo

LazyLibrary @Chrissyreadit True! I have been on litsy for a long time now myself! And do see that ebb and flow 2mo
cariashley I‘m not on tiktok either. Regular life has been pulling me away from Litsy in the past couple years but I‘m always coming back. It‘s the only platform I actually interact on, even if it‘s not all the time. I read my goodreads newsfeed and rate the books I read, but have never gotten into engaging on that site. I love Litsy and hope it never changes. 2mo
Monica5 I'm not s Tiktok person. I have been unusually busy this month and haven't been on list everyday, like I normally am. I think sometimes life gets in our way of reading and we can't read as much as we would love too. 2mo

I read this for the first time, because it came up in the comments on another post. Listen, I enjoyed Silverstein‘s poetry as a kid and even read The Unicorn in some competition, but this was a no for me.

I did enjoy the “revised edition” below:

Ruthiella That alternate ending is awesome! 👍 (edited) 3mo

#Two4Tuesday @TheSpineView

Thank you for the tag, Lisa.

1. We‘ll go to my parents‘ home. This year there will probably be about 16 of us. Everyone will sit in the dining room talking after eating, if the weather‘s nice the kids will go outside and my dad and I will be watching football. 🤓

2. The tagged.

TheSpineView You're welcome! Happy Thanksgiving! 5mo
