Night-Time is My Time
Night-Time is My Time | Mary Higgins Clark

The definition of an owl had always pleased him: "I am the owl," he would whisper to himself after he had selected his prey, "and night-time is my time." Jean Sheridan, a prominent historian, returns to her hometown to attend the twenty-year reunion of Stonecroft Academy, where she is to be honoured along with six other members of her class. There is, however, something uneasy in the air: one woman in the group, Alison Kenall, a beautiful, high-powered Hollywood agent, died just a few days before, drowned in her pool during an early morning swim. She is the fifth woman in the class whose life has come to a sudden, mysterious end. At the award dinner, Jean does not suspect that among the distinguished people she is greeting is the "Owl," a murderer nearing the countdown on his mission of vengeance against the Stonecroft women who had mocked or humiliated him, with Jean his final intended victim.

This was actually one of my favorite MHC books I've read, although a lot of other reviews found it too jumbled. I liked the way that every time I thought I knew which person was the bad guy, someone else said something that made me give him the side eyes instead.

Jean Sheridan, college dean & historian, returns to Cornwall-on-the-Hudson, NY, to attend the 20 year reunion of Stonecroft Academy. Also amongst the attendees is the “Owl“, a serial killer who has spent years tracking down & murdering the women who he thinks wronged him as a teenager. Only Jean Sheridan & Laura Wilcox remain alive of that group & they will both be at the reunion. Perfect timing to complete his murderous mission. (Continued)

OutsmartYourShelf I've read several of this author's books & they tend to be either really good or complete duds. It went on for far too long - I had to speedread the final third just to find out 'whodunnit - with too many suspects. Verdict: not one of the author's best works, overlong & dull characters. 2⭐

Two selfies. Top one is my favorite holiday cocktail or drink. Eggnog with a splash...ok a couple splashes...of rum. The quote on the cup is from The Prophet by Khalil Gibran.

The bottom picture is of a wrapped and unwrapped gift for my grandma. Both gifts are books. I didn't want to take a selfie of me in the middle of wrapping so I'm doing a before and after instead.

Patchshank The whole quote on the cup: "And forget not that the earth delights to feel your barr feet and the winds long to play with your hair." 4y
Buechersuechtling A lovely quote. The only thing by him I know is that “classic”: “About children” – https://bit.ly/2K09Q5V. 4y

I was very drawn into this story and went along assuming I knew "whodunnit" which was fine, I wanted to see how it all played out. But at the very end the big reveal was a complete shock (I'm sure intentionally), but such a shock that I thought I'd read the whole book incorrectly! Not sure we were given enough story to make me have an excited, "What!?" moment, it was more of a subdued, "Huh?" 3.5 stars

I used to LOVE MHC books when I was younger, but now they're a bit predictable and not real deep. A good suspense/palate cleanser read though.

Jhullie I couple of years ago I reread them in chronological order and I found it interesting to watch the progression of technology through time: the need to find a phone box vs everyone having a mobile phone etc. 8y
Aswenson @Jhullie I found myself trying to guess the copyright date as I read. I do the same with a couple other authors I read prolifically. 😊 8y
Aswenson @jhullie Do you have a favorite MHC? 8y
Jhullie I have always liked 'A Cry in the Dark' and 'Remember Me'. I have really enjoyed the new 'Under Suspicion' books though and buy them as soon as they come out. 8y
Tanner I really enjoyed her older ones but gave up reading her new ones a few years ago - they were indeed too predictable. 8y

I couldn't think of a horror book from my early life, but this is the first book I remember truly freaking me out. I read it in middle school — when I was obsessed with Mary Higgins Clark. Even though it made my skin crawl to read from the killer's perspective, I couldn't put it down. It gave me waking nightmares. Perhaps that's why it's the only one of hers I really remember. #allhallowsread #scaryreads #scaretober

MeganB I went through a MHC phase in middle school too! But it was Loves Music Loves to Dance that freaked me out the worst. 8y
Linsy @MeganB That one rings an eerie bell in my head, but I can't recall any details ... except the creepy cover with the shoes. We would've been the best of friends in middle school! Or just freaked ourselves out even more, lol. 8y
MeganB Probably both! And it was the one where the serial killer placed personal ads and then danced with the dead bodies. It was so awful/kid of great 8y
