Joan of Arc
Joan of Arc: A History | Helen Castor
The acclaimed historian Helen Castorbestselling author and BBC broadcaster of She-Wolves, the story of England's queens before Elizabeth Ireturns with the incredible story of Joan of Arc, as only a biographer of Castor's enormous talents can tell it.Helen Castor brings us afresh a gripping life of Joan of Arc. Instead of the icon, she gives us a living, breathing young woman, a roaring girl fighting the English and taking sides in a bloody civil war that was tearing apart fifteenth-century France. Here is a portrait of a nineteen-year-old peasant who hears voices from God; a teenager transformed into a warrior, leading an army to victory in an age that believed women should not fight. And it is also the story behind the myth we all know, a myth that began to take hold at her trial: that of the Maid of Orleans, the savior of France, a young woman burned at the stake as a heretic, a woman who, five hundred years later, would be declared a saint.Joan and her world are brought vividly to life in this startling new take on the medieval world.Castor brings us to the heart of the action, to a woman and a country in turmoil, a world where no one, not Joan herself or the people around herprinces, bishops, soldiers, or peasantsknew what would happen next.Adding complexity, depth, and fresh insight into Joan's life, showing her confronting the challenges of faith and doubt in a superstitious age, Castor's Joan of Arc is a rich history and biography that allows us to better understand this remarkable woman and her world.

Well-written history, touch of snark to keep it snappy. Extra scene-setting for full background on warring factions (Joan only shows up halfway through the book!). Symbols. Gossip. Momentum & miracles. Joan leads the battles, God gets the credit. Even back then, calls of “slut” & “blasphemous whore.” But rocks & slurs & arrows be dammed, battle Joan rises again. In men‘s hose & doublets! Trial, pyre, rehabilitation. Charisma & force of will. 2015

4 hours into an 11 hour audiobook, no Joan yet. The history of the hot mess France had become is great & well told; it would probably zip along in print. For me, it just isn't working as an audiobook.

Not my fave Joan of Arc book, but it was good. This definitely covers a lot of history. I liked the epilogue, sort of the after, or what happened next.

#JuneTunz #Gold Here are two books from my stacks that have lots of sparkly, glitzy gold on their covers. Norse Mythology I loved (both the audio read by Gaiman and the print book) and Joan of Arc is in my #TBR stack. I bought it at the thrift store several weeks, partially because I was drawn to the shiny gold cover. 😆💛📚

Caroline2 😂 I bought that Joan of Arc book too for exactly the same reason!!! 😆👍🏻 7y
emmamustread I've never read anything by him but Norse mythology is something I enjoy reading about so I may have to grab this book soon. 7y
taresia I've read Gaiman's Norse mythology recently - loved it! ;) 7y

DebinHawaii @Caroline2 Hah! Happy to know I am not alone in my love for shiny things. 😆👍 7y
DebinHawaii @emmamustread It's enjoyable. If you do audiobooks, Gaiman reading this, or any of his work is fantastic. 👍😀 7y
DebinHawaii @taresia It's a good one. I am a big fan of his work. 📚👍 7y
emmamustread @DebinHawaii I've actually never done an audio book lol 7y
DebinHawaii @emmamustread I didn't before the Litsy influence but now I love them. #blameitonlitsy 😆👍 7y
emmamustread @DebinHawaii I'm a litsy noob lol 7y
DebinHawaii @emmamustread Welcome! 🎉It won't take long before you feel like a Litsy long-timer! Littens are great people but hard on your #TBR pile 📚📚📚📚& good at getting you into things like audiobooks. 😆👍 7y

A brilliant and moving work of political history, which brought to life the complex landscape of Joan's world before introducing us to her, thereby showing us how extraordinary she really was. I could hardly put it down.

brooke.arynn I need to read this! 8y
noelia.patricia @brooke.arynn I can lend it to you! 8y

Despite a cast of characters that's more complicated than a soap opera, this is an awesome read.
