Dancing Hands: How Teresa Carreo Played the Piano for President Lincoln | Margarita Engle
26 posts | 15 read | 9 to read
In soaring words and stunning illustrations, Margarita Engle and Rafael Lpez tell the story of Teresa Carreo, a child prodigy who played piano for Abraham Lincoln. As a little girl, Teresa Carreo loved to let her hands dance across the beautiful keys of the piano. If she felt sad, music cheered her up, and when she was happy, the piano helped her share that joy. Soon she was writing her own songs and performing in grand cathedrals. Then a revolution in Venezuela forced her family to flee to the United States. Teresa felt lonely in this unfamiliar place, where few of the people she met spoke Spanish. Worst of all, there was fighting in her new home, toothe Civil War. Still, Teresa kept playing, and soon she grew famous as the talented Piano Girl who could play anything from a folk song to a sonata. So famous, in fact, that President Abraham Lincoln wanted her to play at the White House! Yet with the country torn apart by war, could Teresas music bring comfort to those who needed it most?

I picked a picture book for this month‘s #foodandlit for Venezuela. While it was a nice story, I felt like the history in it wasn‘t really explained but just implied, assuming the reader just knows. And especially for children‘s books, I don‘t like that.

This is a story about how a young girl named Teresa Carreño played the piano for president Abraham Lincoln. Her father taught her how to play when she was a young child. It describes her talent and passion of playing piano and making music. Teresa and her father had to sail to New York when a war erupted in her hometown. At 10 years old, Lincoln invited her to come play for his whole family because of how talented she was.

Did you know a ten-year-old piano prodigy from Venezuela played for President Lincoln? I never heard of Teresa Carreno, but this great little book was a wonderful introduction. Vibrant illustrations accompany her amazing story.

I always enjoy Engle‘s books and this, the story of María Teresa Carreño García de Ceno, was no exception. The historical note at the end was uplifting (she travelled around the globe and played famous composers, but she only returned home to Venezuela once “because her countrymen disapproved of her, scandalized by the independent spirit that caused her to divorced three times before finding happiness with her fourth husband.”

Dancing Hands is a book that is written by Margarita Engle and illustrated by Rafael López. It has won the Pura Belpre Award and is a biography (B). This book tells an inspiring story about a girl named Teresa Carreño who has a passion for music and loves to play the piano specifically. She moved to the United States with her family after a revolution in her home country, Venezuela.

Nkaufmann Teresa felt overwhelmed with this change but she continued to play the piano and became famously known as the “Piano Girl”. She even got to play the piano for President Lincoln! I encourage everyone to read this heartwarming story about the real-life story of Teresa Carreño.

This book would be best read aloud (RA) as it's on the longer side and it may be challenging for young readers. In addition, this book has a very important message...

Nkaufmann attached to it. Because of this, I think it would be useful for teachers to guide their students through the story while also asking them questions that lead to interesting discussions about the book.

The UDL principle 2.4 regarding promoting understanding across languages and the EL principle 22 regarding giving enough wait time for second language learners to respond to questions can both be met by this book. Teachers should strive to...

Nkaufmann ensure that all ELLs understand the story and are given an appropriate amount of wait time to answer questions about the story.

JessicaO I love love love this book! Music is something that I am passionate about and I know students relate to it in such a special way. ELLs will appreciate that wait to in order to give them a better understanding of the text! Thank you for sharing this book. 4y
Viviannef I have yet to read this book, but after seeing your post I definitely need to add it to my “must read” list! Reminds me a lot of the book “Dreamers” by Yuyi Morales! Your UDL principles and ESOL strategies align perfectly with the RA. And great resource! 4y
DrSpalding I just took a screenshot of this book and added it to my stack. What a beautiful book that would be excellent for reading aloud during a study of the presidents. I see Vivianne made a connection to Dreamers and I made a connection to all of Lopez‘s other books including Maybe Something Beautiful! Excellent book selection. 4y

In 1863, at the age of 10, Venezuelan refugee Teresa Carreño played piano for President Lincoln at the White House. Carreño would go on to be known as a composer and opera singer, as well as one of the best pianist of her era.

Illustrations by Rafael López perfectly capture the story in vibrant colors, winning him a Pura Belpré award this year.
