Wake, Siren
Wake, Siren: Ovid Resung | Nina MacLaughlin
16 posts | 7 read | 1 reading | 32 to read
In fierce, textured voices, the women of Ovid's Metamorphoses claim their stories and challenge the power of myth I am the home of this story. After thousands of years of other peoples tellings, of all these different bridges, of words gotten wrong, Ill tell it myself. Seductresses and she-monsters, nymphs and demi-goddesses, populate the famous myths of Ovid's Metamorphoses. But what happens when the story of the chase comes in the voice of the woman fleeing her rape? When the beloved coolly returns the seducer's gaze? When tales of monstrous transfiguration are sung by those transformed? In voices both mythic and modern, Wake, Siren revisits each account of love, loss, rape, revenge, and change. It lays bare the violence that undergirds and lurks in the heart of Ovids narratives, stories that helped build and perpetuate the distorted portrayal of women across centuries of art and literature. Drawing on the rhythms of epic poetry and alt rock, of everyday speech and folk song, of fireside whisperings and therapy sessions, Nina MacLaughlin, the acclaimed author of Hammer Head, recovers what is lost when the stories of women are told and translated by men. She breathes new life into these fraught and well-loved myths.

#pantone2023 #23in2023

This was an mixed bag of emotions for me.
MacLaughlin writes these from the pov of the female characters based on Ovid's Metamorphosis and gives them voices where some women had none, expands on the the few that did, and fleshes out the characterizations of them all.

Each story is vibrant in it's own way, each with a different tone and voice but there were some that I just struggled to get through.

#BasicWitchSwap aesthetic. I am 💯 a hearth or kitchen witch — all cozy, fires, blankets, tea/coffee, & familiars. The image in the middle is a depiction of Nehallenna, a Dutch Germanic goddess who predates the Romans, whose emblems are 🍎, 🥖, 🐟, & a 🐕 companion. She is only found in the exact coastal area where my maternal grandfather‘s family originated. Pictured also my current familiar, Bunny. And cemeteries — oh, my beloved cemeteries.

I‘ve finished Reflection this month, and I‘m halfway thru Apple Cider Slaying. I started Wake, Siren as my leisurely read for the dance class pickup line. And I need to read The Mitford Murders as well to complete #bookspin and #doublebookspin for the month. Cross your fingers for me!

My library TBR pile for the Corona quarantine in Santa Clara. We have 48 confirmed cases and half of them community spread. So I went to the library yesterday to stock up. 📚

Ain‘t this the truth! I started this a couple weeks ago before I had to return it to the library because we were traveling out of state. Even though I only have a few days left here, I‘m reading a completely different library book, and it wasn‘t even that good...I decided to check it out again today 🤦🏻‍♀️ Wish me luck!!

Feminist retelling of Greek/Roman myths. Focus on the women who were victims of the gods‘ crimes and were turned into monsters as a result. Powerful, possibly triggering if you have been the victim of rape and/or violence. If you liked Madeline Miller‘s Circe, these short stories might interest you. https://cannonballread.com/2019/12/wake-siren-ovid-resung-elcicco/

Happy (slightly belated) book birthday to the stunning, visceral Wake, Siren by Nina MacLaughlin. The voices of the women in Ovid‘s stories of metamorphoses are given room to rage and soar in this vivid, resounding space. Important and welcome.

I don‘t normally use a pencil when I read but with this book I wanted to underline so many sentences (it wasn‘t my copy so I couldn‘t!) This retelling of Ovid‘s Metamorphoses gives women and female characters the chance to own their stories. It‘s powerful, intense, beautiful, and jarring. Can‘t wait for this to come out in November
