Murder in the Museum
Murder in the Museum: A British Library Crime Classic | John Rowland
10 posts | 6 read | 41 to read
When Professor Julius Arnell breathes his last in the hushed atmosphere of the British Museum Reading Room, it looks like death from natural causes. Who, after all, would have cause to murder a retired academic whose life was devoted to Elizabethan literature? Inspector Shelleys suspicions are aroused when he finds a packet of poisoned sugared almonds in the dead mans pocket; and a motive becomes clearer when he discovers Arnells connection to a Texan oil millionaire. Soon another man plunges hundreds of feet into a reservoir on a Yorkshire moor. What can be the connection between two deaths so different, and so widely separated? The mild-mannered museum visitor Henry Fairhurst adds his detective talents to Inspector Shelleys own, and together they set about solving one of the most baffling cases Shelley has ever encountered.

Low pick. This book did what I expected of it. I have to say it took me a while to guess the murderer…my own theory was a bit outlandish 😂

rabbitprincess I totally thought Henry Fairhurst would end up being the murderer because of how he was trying to insinuate himself into the investigation! 3y
Avanders 😂 it‘s fun getting carried away with a whodunit theory 😁😁 3y

rabbitprincess @BookishMarginalia It looks like it will make a good book to slip in between big non-fiction books 😊 3y

First published in 1938, this is a vintage style mystery. When Henry Fairport sees a man die in the British Museum Reading Room, he's determined to help the police solve the murder. I liked the style of this and will look for more British Library Crime Classics.

This was a classic 1930‘s British crime story, and in that sense, I enjoyed it! It didn‘t really impress me as anything more, though.

Brought it along to my brief vacation in The Gorge in OR/WA last weekend, and the scenery reminded me a little of the Moors in the book 👍🏻

A competent enough mystery with the usual sort of set of characters. Easy reading. So-so seems such an ungenerous rating for something I read in one go and found entertaining, so even though it's nothing exceptional, I'll call it a pick.

It is worth noting that I'm in the perfect mood for a cozy, having just handed in a godawful assignment from hell and had to ban someone from a website because they decided the right way to respond to me (as a moderator) telling them off was to dig up my real name, find my Facebook, and comment on a pic of the bunnies that they were going to eat them. People, why.

Hulk is cleaning the mere thought of this person off her face. #BunniesofLitsy

PenguinInFlight I‘m with Hulk. Trolls suck. 🤬 7y
Hooked_on_books I‘m on the side of the bunnies. Maybe a bunny army will take down the troll. People suck sometimes. 7y

Yep. Oops.

Started on Murder in the Museum on a whim and I'm honestly tempted to finish it before bed. It's typical Golden Age, but I'm being amused by the web of scholarly jealousies.

A tidy mystery -- perfect for a holiday or weekend read! Fairly short at just over 200 pages. I wish the plot line had included more about the British Museum (rather than just initial setting) and the academics' specialities (Elizabethan literature). Still well worth the read! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
