My Kingdom for a Horse
My Kingdom for a Horse: The War of the Roses | Ed West
39 posts | 2 read | 6 to read
From William Shakespeare's series of history dramas to Sir Walter Scott and George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire, not to mention the smash-hit TV show Game of Thrones, the British civil war of 1455 to 1485 has inspired writers more than any other. Ed West's My Kingdom for a Horse illuminates the bloody war fought for thirty long years between the descendants of King Edward III in a battle for the throne. Named after the emblems used by the two leading families, the Houses of York and Lancaster, the title of the conflict gives it a romantic feel that probably wasn't as apparent to those on the battlefield having swords shoved into their eyes. And, for all the lovely heraldry and glamorous costumes of the era, the war saw the complete breakdown of the medieval code of chivalry in which prisoners were spared, which makes it even better drama. In 1460-61 alone, twelve noblemen were killed in the field and six were beheaded off it, removing a third of the English peerage. Written in the spirit of a black comedy, My Kingdom for a Horse is an ideal introduction for anyone interested in one of history's most insane wars. Featuring some of history's most infamous figures, including the insane King Henry VI, whose madness triggered the breakdown, and the wicked Richard III, who murdered his young nephews to take the throne, this fifth entry in West's A Very, Very Short History of England series is a must for fans of British history.

Another great, smart ass history by Ed West. I love his writing style and the fact that he doesn‘t take himself too seriously. He‘s clearly done his research, but he still has fun with it. I honestly believe students would like history if it was taught in the same manner that West writes his books. This is history as it should be.

So much going on here with this, @Texreader. I think I had to read this 4 or 5 times to take it all in. No wonder I sucked at spelling as a kid.
#EdWest #MyKingdomForAHorse #history #englishhistory #snarkyhistory #spelling #notmyfault

julesG That German example is wrong. It's "ich bin, du bist, er ist". 5y
GingerAntics @julesG I thought that last of the three looked funny. I thought I‘d just gotten my French and my German mixed up. Maybe that‘s what it was back in the 1400‘s? 🤷🏼‍♀️ 5y
julesG In the 1400s Middle High German was spoken. The verb "sein" (to be) was "sîn" back then. In it's Indikative form, it was "ich bin, dû bist, er ist". In the Konjunktiv form it was "ich sî, dû sîst, er sî". BUT I'm not an expert on this topic. 5y

GingerAntics @julesG I‘m nodding with that glazed look in my eyes now. lol You‘re lucky I remember any modern German as it is. I definitely never knew High German. lol 5y
julesG High German is German. We call it "High" to distinguish it from the lots of dialects (Bavarian, Saxonian,...) and regional variations (Swiss German, Austrian German,...). It's the "purest" version of German that hardly anyone speaks. It is a bit like Received Pronounciation in Britain. Proper German, the unblemished language (I'm rolling my eyes here), is supposed to be spoken in the area between Bremen and Hanover. Everyone else speaks dialect.? 5y
GingerAntics @julesG oh for the love of all that‘s holy. 🙄 What is children‘s programming in? We used to watch cartoons and learn to play German games in German. I‘m going to guess education stuff is all “proper” German? Because certainly German that other Germans can understand isn‘t good enough. 🙄🤣😂🤣 5y
julesG Yes, education, TV programmes, radio is "High German", although regional accents(!) are allowed. Heaven forbid dialect. Just another reason why I love to watch films in their original version; in the dubbed versions all characters speak High German - so many facets are missing. Just imagine Outlander where EVERY single character speaks Received Pronounciation and you get an idea how much torture dubbed versions are for me. 5y
julesG BTW, there are regional variations, dialects, and even accents that are hard to understand even for a German. 5y
GingerAntics @julesG okay dubbed sounds like absolute torture. That would just be obnoxious. Absolutely not. Okay, so I guess the bits and pieces I know are high German. I can‘t spell in German any better than I can in English, though. 5y
julesG 😂😂😂 5y
GingerAntics @julesG for example, why one earth are their so many letters in Auf Wiedersehen?! I can never keep them all straight. How many E‘s? Don‘t for the get H or the I. Half the time I want to make the S, a Z. I‘m practically German illiterate!!! Although, there was a time I read it better than I spoke it. Go figure. 5y
julesG My daughter just learned about the diphtongs and when to add an H for a long sounding vowel. It's tricky, but contrary to English, what you see is what you get. German spelling is rather literal (no pun intended). The way it's spelled is how it's pronounced. Long 'iiiiii' sound? Use either 'ie' or 'ih'. Short vowel sound? Often followed by a double consonant... 5y
GingerAntics @julesG I actually never knew any of those things. Yeah, English is messed up. You can basically have w silent any letter as long as it‘s accepted spelling. It‘s madness. Yacht - who in the bloody hell has heard of a silent ch?! 5y

julesG Richard a widow? Not widower? 5y
GingerAntics @julesG 🤷🏼‍♀️ I had that thought, too. No idea on that one. I was more focused on married at 4, widowed at 8. lol 5y
julesG Strange. Typo that wasn't picked up in editing? 5y
GingerAntics @julesG dunno, maybe. You‘d think that would jump out, but his humorous tone could have been distracting for the editor as well, I suppose. 5y

TrishB There is much poetic licence in Shakespeare! 5y
GingerAntics @TrishB I‘m not necessarily against that, but I think in this case it would be really funny to have a battle raging on stage while the king sings to himself!!! 5y

In the 1470s, William Caxton had a profound effect on the English language standardizing words across regions, but leading to the most unusual results we question today. This is the best (most fascinating) chapter of the book by far.

GingerAntics @readinginthedark that this would become Trump‘s new stolen idea, or that Trump doesn‘t read? Really, both are probably equally terrifying. 5y

This is a case of kissing cousins and it‘s not helpful at all to us now. Just remember, this is probably where Prince Charles‘s massive ears came from and be glad neither of his sons married to close to home (hell, one crossed a bloody ocean).

CarolynM I have to say that is is something I always struggle with in the History plays. They make sense while I'm watching them, but when I try to remember any specific details I get tripped up by all the same name / changing name stuff😂😂 (edited) 5y
GingerAntics @CarolynM right? It seems that each time period in history has a set of names that were popular so you end up with multiple people with the same bloody name. In this case, it was all done by HenRichEdward and we‘ll all move on. 😂 5y

Now to take on this gem. I do enjoy a good history. I do enjoy a good dose of snark. This author tends to do both together, so what‘s not to love. Here goes nothing, @Texreader

This author can be entertaining but his tendency to try to name every person who has turned up in history, without context, makes his books tiresome to read. This is his first and only mention of this Joan; who is she and how in the heck does her “idiocy” have any bearing on Ralph‘s sons becoming barons? And who is Ralph? I‘ve started skipping this nonsense to try to get back to the history. Probably my last Ed West book for this reason.

GingerAntics Oh god, it‘s deteriorating? 🤦🏼‍♀️ 5y
Texreader @GingerAntics Or I‘m stupid. I had similar problems with the last book and you seemed to troop right through it. But I went back several pages and reread them trying to make sense of this and just couldn‘t. So is it me? Or his sometimes mind-numbing detail? 5y
GingerAntics I guess we‘ll find out when I read it. 🤷🏼‍♀️ 5y

Again, Charles‘s fear may not have been misplaced:

“He had strange fears, so that on top of his terror of entering a house in case it collapsed on him, he would never cross a wooden bridge (again, wooden bridges at the time probably did collapse quite a lot).”

GingerAntics Love this!!! 6y

The 1400s was not a good time to be alive, one finding oneself more often dead than not. I think we all might have been a bit neurotic for it.

“The younger Charles was, although not mad, highly neurotic and had a terrible fear that if he walked into a house it would fall down on him, after such a horror did happen in La Rochelle (it was much easier to be neurotic at a time when utterly horrific things actually did occur more often).”

GingerAntics His endnotes are always the best!!! 6y

On the complexities of describing the War of the Roses:

“the families involved had such a heavy death toll that one aristocrat would be killed and then his son or brother—often with the same title—would die in a battle a couple of years later, leaving the reader to wonder if he hadn‘t just been killed on the previous page.”

GingerAntics That seems about right. lol 6y

This one is next up in my nonfiction reading but I wanted some levity this time. Sure enough the intro starts out with this beauty:

“It ended when Henry Tudor, distantly related and with an extremely dubious claim, was able to take the throne as Henry VII, largely on account of still breathing.”

Get it? “largely on account of still breathing”? 🤣

Have you read it yet @GingerAntics ?

GingerAntics Not yet. I‘ve seemed to dig myself into something of a book hole, but I‘m working my way out so I can read this one. It‘s going to be a great ride. I really hope they keep putting his books on sale. I think I will gladly read them all. lol 6y

@Texreader game on!!! This time I‘m going to read one book at a time so I can actually finish this gem in a timely fashion. Ed West is certainly becoming a favourite historian.

julesG I need those books. But they are soooo expensive here. 6y
GingerAntics @julesG really? That sucks. The first one @Texreader found on sale for $2 and then this one went on sale. There are at least a few others about $10-$12 each, but I‘m guessing they‘re all going to go on sale at some point. It seems to be a rolling sale on the series. I should keep a few bucks in my account so I‘m ready for the next one to be on sale. lol 6y

GingerAntics @julesG sheesh, what does Germany have against snarky English history?! 6y
julesG It's not Germany. I guess it's amazon 6y
GingerAntics @julesG oh well you know how I feel about amazon. 🤬 They got in trouble here for forcing other ebook stories to have prices above theirs and then making books more expensive in their store, knowing it would still be the best price. There was this huge settlement and then we all got like $5 out of the deal. Of course amazon managed to give it to us so it could ONLY be used on more kindle books. 🙄 6y
julesG The ebooks have the same price on Google books. So, it might be a German problem. 6y
GingerAntics @julesG that‘s weird. I also think the EU would have long since cracked down on Amazon pulling something like that. It still seems very odd that they wouldn‘t have a sale everywhere. Maybe they‘re US sales only? 🤷🏼‍♀️ (edited) 6y
julesG It's on sale in the UK, BTW. Just not here. 😬😬😬 6y
