Back to school has hit our family like a ton of bricks. I‘ve watched Fleabag AND You - and I‘m not much of a TV gal and managed to get in 50 pages a week for the #chunksterchallenge2020. It‘s about half what I‘d hoped but half is so much better than none!

ljuliel Same here. I used to like books the thicker the better when young. Now, really thick ones sorta scare me off a bit. Not sure why. 5y

4⭐️ It took me 5 weeks to finish this doorstopper; the book cover has turned curly! I did get emotional experiencing the war with the characters, but I found that Grossman over-romanticized the good sides of humanity. Most of the characters are of good personalities, hard-working, and patriotic. Where are the bad guys? All for Nothing by Walter Kempowski is more realistic in picturing the mess that war brought to the people

sisilia @tamra How the war changed the civilians‘ lives, and also we followed the soldiers‘ journey marching to Stalingrad and all risked their lives there. No wonder this book could get published in Russia. I‘m curious about Life and Fate now; I want to know why it was banned 5y

I‘m only 15% in, and I‘m in love with this book 🥰

I imagine all the male characters as Jude Law, Joseph Fiennes, and Ed Harris. The ladies are Rachel Weisz and her derivatives. How‘s that for a compelling story? ❤️

It‘s going to take me ages to finish this book, not that I‘m not enjoying it. I‘m facing two major problems now:
1. The Russian names! I have limited memory bytes and it is truly a struggle here 😅 I‘m writing them down and it helps a bit
2. This book smells so good I keep stopping to sniff it 🙈I have book sniffing addiction! 🐽🐽🐽

sisilia I have not @Leftcoastzen ☺️ The plan is to read Stalingraad first, and hopefully Life and Fate soon after. I heard that the latter is life changing. My life won‘t be the same after I read these two 😆 5y

Leftcoastzen I feel bad that I have not read Stalingrad.When I read Life and Fate , Stalingrad had not been translated yet. I would have preferred to read them in order. 5y

sisilia Aww it‘s never too late @Leftcoastzen It‘s the same translator (Robert Chandler) as the one who worked on Life and Fate; and he said that he did it better with Stalingrad 5y

Tamra @sisilia I haven‘t. I‘m glad you mentioned them because I had forgotten! I already have “Night” on my Kindle and it got buried. “Augustus” I wouldn‘t have been attracted to before I took my antiquity lit course, but now I am. Thank you for asking! 5y
