Drawing Down the Moon
Drawing Down the Moon: Witches, Druids, Goddess-Worshippers, and Other Pagans in America | Margot Adler
Now fully revised-the classic study of Neo-Paganism Almost thirty years since its original publication, Drawing Down the Moon continues to be the only detailed history of the burgeoning but still widely misunderstood Neo- Pagan subculture. Margot Adler attended ritual gatherings and interviewed a diverse, colorful gallery of people across the United States, people who find inspiration in ancient deities, nature, myth, even science fiction. In this new edition featuring an updated resource guide of newsletters, journals, books, groups, and festivals, Margot Adler takes a fascinating and honest look at the religious experiences, beliefs, and lifestyles of modern America's Pagan groups.

This was a detailed and very well researched book (especially for it‘s time). While there are a couple of contradictions and a one or two points I disagree with, it‘s definitely a pick. I learned a lot and am glad to have expanded my knowledge.

Wow, there's a lot of pagan history in this book that I had no idea even existed. There were bits and pieces that I knew about and that I have experienced, but so much of our history is lost to us. This book is a gift and a blessing, and while it is long at times and a bit boring and redundant, it is vital for young and new pagans to read. To know where they came from and where they are going.

Darklunarose I really want to read this one. 3y
rsteve388 No joke, there are huge sections where your like, move it along already, but overall the book is good to read to be aware of how the pagan faith has looked in the last 40 years or so in America. @Darklunarose 3y
Darklunarose @rsteve388 I‘ll have to get a hold of it. The history of my path is very important to know. 3y
rsteve388 Try to get a hold of the last version that Margot wrote. It's the 2018 addition 3y
Darklunarose @rsteve388 will do 🙂 3y

These are my reads for July. I didn't read as much as I did last month andi am half way through the tagged book. I did a lot of short story collections. Which was interesting.

Very informative book. I listened to this audiobook over the span of a week. It is full of history and lots of intriguing data and facts about various pagan religions. I took my time with it because there was so much information and I didn't want to miss anything. Excellent read if this is a topic you're interested in.

AHHHH MY FIRST SEMESTER OF GRAD SCHOOL IS DONE. Chronic illness stuff has been acting up lately so I barely made it through, but now I am done, and in 7 hours I will be starting my ~12 hour journey home to NC for Christmas. Hopefully that means lots of reading.🤞 Audible gave me free books in a settlement thing, so I also have 3 new audiobooks to look forward to! (After I finish my current reads 😂)

Eggbeater Congrats on finishing your first semester! 🎉👏👏👏 4y

"Socially understood, polytheism is eternally in unsolvable conflict with social monotheism, which in its worst form is fascism and in its less destructive forms is imperialism, capitalism, feudalism, and monarchy..."

The moon and stars stickers seemed appropriate here. 🌙✨🌙✨🌙 A friend recently came out as a witch to me and encouraged me to read this book. There are so many misconceptions about paganism, neo-paganism, Wicca, witchcraft, and other nature-based polytheistic religions. I was expecting this book to drag like a textbook, but it really doesn't. I'm fascinated and very happy my friend found a religion that works for her.

AThousandLives87 I started out as a Pagan before becoming an atheist. So I totally understand the whole misconceptions thing. It's a hard life to live. Kudos to your friend. 7y
OffTheBeatenShelf.com @AThousandLives87 I'm loving the book so far, especially since I didn't know anything about Paganism beforehand. If you don't mind me asking, did you face a lot of discrimination when you were a Pagan? 7y
AThousandLives87 @OffTheBeatenShelf.com Yes I did. I was once asked to take off my necklace (a pentacle) while at work in a restaurant. But they never asked the cross wearing people to take theirs off. Which I thought was BS. It's religious discrimination. 7y
